Some medications are banned for CDL drivers.

Well between my long-term girlfriend deciding she's gay and trying to care for my of my schizophrenic mom I'm done. I'm letting go of my problems not running from them.

Don't let the girlfriend deciding she is gay bring you down. I would decide to be gay too if I was a girl.
Just trying to give you some things to think about. Good luck in what you decide.

Trouble is immortal. Once you attempt to run from Trouble, you will have to flee all the days of your life. You can never become the person that you want to be until you stop trying to escape your life situations, past, current or future.

Welcome. If you're ready for an adventure, one awaits in being a truck driver. Mind you, adventures have their fair share of difficulties and problems, their not always sunny and painless!
Anyway, I have a myopic experience as a trucker, so can only speak from my limited experience. I'm an OTR driver, by choice. Specifically I'm a West Coast reefer jockey. I started with Swift and still with them.
I think trucking is easier to get into than survive through. I think certain personality traits are almost essential to being a good driver and having this all fit and work out. Many who try this, don't work out because it just doesn't fit them. No harm or fault. However, those of us who do fit with it, enjoy it quite a bit. It is in many ways a unique occupation when compared with most others.
Most companies allow a pet. Usually have to pay some deposit and/or monthly fee and perhaps breed restrictions. Each company has their own scheme for it. But, pets in trucks, especially dogs, are quite common.
And, I wouldn't think of it as being a prisoner in your truck. My truck has basically become my home and although the cramped nature takes some adjusting to, I'm quite comfy in my truck!! As far as being tied to it, Swift has quite a few terminals and if I want to get some time out of my truck, I'll usually park it at a terminal and then don't have to be concerned with it. Sometimes I'll drop my trailer at a terminal and bobtail around to a hotel and stores. I could probably park my truck and trailer at a truck stop and leave it there. But, I've just never needed to do that.
As for hazmat, you can easily survive a long, varied and prosperous career in trucking without ever having, or needing, a hazmat endorsement.
    Best of luck to you!!!

    GREETINGS TO "The Mighty Waffle",

I, personally, realized after a few years Long/Short Haul Trucking, that HazMat wasn't worth the aggravation to "re-acquire". That "Hoop" and all the D.O.T. EYES, no longer needed.
Bi-Annual Physical was sufficient and through to 2020, some of the D.O.T. Physical "Requirements" began disappearing.
When I started Trucking in late '98, HM "seemed important" from all the "School, Trucker talk as well those Companies preferring/requiring said Endorsement".
My Endorsement finally expired in June, 2012 and I felt more Freedom.

I had, random locally (within a 30 mile radius), hauled 35K - 45K HM without the endorsement and placards under the labeling on the B.O.L.'s of "Limited Quantity".

There's NOTHING "Idiotic" about not wanting HazMat!

H.M. IS ONLY A REQUIREMENT IF YOU CHOOSE IT TO BE!!
    CHEERS!!
