Ok, I have read the bulk of the post here an the majority of them refer to leasing an the pros an cons to doing that. I really have no sense of the business an no experience in this industry, so I am 100% going to go with being a Company driver regardless of the Company. Since I am new, I'm curious on the direction to go. Again I have no experience so I understand that its not gonna be some dream come true type job starting out, but having job opprotunities with Prime an Werner I'm curious about which is the lesser of the two evils? I see that there are jobs here at home but like everyone else as mentioned, you need experience. We had the Werner recruiter come to our school, an listening to him you would think that the decision is a no brainer....THEY ARE THE CREAM OF THE CROP...but we all know thats not true. I fully understand that coming into this career choice I'm going to be gone for awhile starting out, not real concerned with that. I'm just wondering what this newbie should realistically expect going with either one an which would be the better one.

Just get on wherever you can. Once you have 1-to-2 years experience, you can pretty much go where you want. My opinion is that Werner is bottom of the barrel along with CRE and Swift - from what I've seen and heard. Your mileage may vary.

Your close! It's 100 hours of CDL instruction and you pay nothing if you complete a full year contract with them. The 100 hour's is close to around about 10k miles give or take, not exact. Then you go back for testing. After that your on the road with a trainer for 60k miles to be a company driver. In order to lease you have to do another 20k miles totaling up 80k miles but you have the option of doing the 20k in a company truck solo or staying on your trainers truck. Most stay on their trainers truck to complete the 20k because you can make more money that way plus add's to your training.

If you leave under contract before 6 months, you pay them back for CDL training in full (like $3,700 in memory serves me) if you leave after 6 months but before a full year you only have to pay back half of that. A full year and you pay nothing. However I got away with paying nothing owed to them with only 10 months under my belt but that is because they broke the contract on their end therefore not being able to collect. Must read the fine print in those contracts. They will save your ### in the long run if something happens or changes within company protocal.

Who changed their tune? What facts scare him, and who?

Maybe if you learned how to quote, we would know exactly what posts you are commenting on.

Got to say that over the years I have found that each company has it pros and cons. None of them are perfect, And guess what, they are all in business to make money. That is the whole reason, right.

Judging from the comments as of late it would seem that Werner, CR England, CRST have moved to the bottom. As far as places for training Swift or Prime seem like the lessor of the evils. Just stay away from the Lease to go bankrupt programs.

You just have to figure out which one fits you. Talk to all the recruiters, get everything they promise you in writing. Also realize that no matter who you train for you will probably need to leave them to get your wages up after a year.

Theres a lot of things that your going to have to adjust to especially during the first year out. My biggest complaint about the industry is that they act like there doing you a favor to get you home, then this crap of 1 day for every 7 days out, they can "Bite Me". But drivers put up with it....

You're exactly correct... even tho i don't drive for prime anylonger and i have my own trucks... i own them and when i get ready to go home.... i get in the seat... start the truck.. push the brake in ... and i'm headed to the house... period...
as a company driver ... you dont have that option because that truck belongs to prime or whoever...
Everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...

Good point Harold... but, not everyone has the funds/credit and/or can afford the risk of starting their own business-- especially in this economy... everybody's situation is different.

    Merry Christmas!

all it takes is a tool box and a little know how and the desire to make it at all cost to fix something like a fifth wheel bushings i think thats what kills alot of o/o's when they sit there and wait on somebody else to fix any little thing on the truck and even company drivers that dont care to get a bit dirty now and then and do minor repairs on their trucks and save the company a service call and a hourly wage for a mechanic and they are not forgotten by the company when times get tough i know i would bend over backwards to keep a driver like that...wouldn't you?:biggrin_25525:
