I just bought a new Galixy radio. Bunch of buttons and switches. 2 in particular are a clarifier and a talk back. I have played with it alittle but I dont notice any difference. I never had a radio with all these options, and like a dummy, threw the box with the directions away as soon as I hooked it up and seen that it worked. Now, I'm guessing that the talk back option should allow me to hear myself when I'm talking, but I dont get nothing, no matter where I put the nob. Do I need an external speaker for that option to work???? Also explain the clairifier.... What does it do?? I have noticed no diff. when I turn it.. Thanks
question about my radio????

Yes the talk back allows you to let yourself hear what you sound like on the radio. No you don't "need" an external speaker to use TB. However you might want to keep TB off while having a conversation or you might be interference on the other parties end.
Clarifier...it sounds like your radio is a single sideband radio...the clarifier is used to fine tune the other parties signals, but it only works in sideband mode. It doesn't work on regular AM, which is where a bulk of truck driver conversations are held....on 19 AM.Randall Thanks this. -
Talk back is turned on and off by pushing the knob in until it clicks, there should be a LED lit when it is on, you set the level by turning the knob, too much and you will get feedback from the speaker to the mike. Clarifier is as said by the first reponder, for SSB usage.

Thanks for the info guys.

Back 40 or more years ago on code ( CW ) they called it SIDETONE ....
Many WW2 radios used it ...... intresting that it has made a bit of a comeback .... -
Sounds like they got it covered, just keep that clarifier centered while you arent using it....its only for SSB operations. And talkback is rather pointless unless you are running echo.

Can anyone answer this ? for me. I have a cobra 25 s/t, running a k40 at., i switched to a 4 ft. at. because i wasn't getting out very far, maybe 1 to 2 miles. My question is when i turn my squelch all the way off or just barely on i get a high squeel that comes & goes. I took it to a radio shop & he said that there was something wrong with my alt. my alt. does charge so is he right or should i get another opinion. The radio is in my '05 ford f150, if that will help. thanks in advance.

Does the squeal go away when you take the antenna connector off ?
-
WA4GCH, When i adjust the squelch knob, even with the sound turned down you can hear poping &
crackling, but no squeeling.

A clarifier does work on AM, it is generally not needed though unless the party you're talking with is fer off the center frequency.
