What kind of distance have you been able to get with your new radio?

I'm sorry to say I haven't had time to set it up. There is a robust repeater group Welcome to North Georgia GMRS with towers pretty close to me. I have been monitoring them in my gmrs handhelds and they talk all over the state of GA. I tried to buy my license last night but I had a browser issue and couldn't make it work. By the time I realized it was the browser I was so tired I couldn't see straight so I'll take another swing at it in a couple days

Okay, no problem. I was just wondering if you had a chance to try it on simplex.

    I
As soon as I get everything set up, I'll try simplex. My son lives 5 or 6 miles away and he has a handheld, so I'll try him first, then the repeaters

My local repeater group www.nggmrs.org (499 members as of 2021) has a cool feature. You can listen/talk on the repeaters via Zello app from anywhere you have internet or data on your cellular phone. Theoretically you don't even need a radio although you do need a membership and FCC call sign.

That sounds a lot like echo-link. Except it's over the phone instead of computer.

I listened to the members while I drove back to N GA last night. I have a call sign now but I didn't want to introduce myself via Zello. I think I'd prefer to make my initial contacts via radio. Zello can come later

I had echo-link setup once, but I never talked anyone. Talking into that cheap computer Mic just didn't seem the same to me. My oldest brother liked it, but it wasn't for me.

Any reliable info to tune up a "GALAXY DX 959 " Don't know if it matters or not but it's a 2018 model that I bought new, and it's never been opened. I't either be running in mobile with wilson 1000 along with a KL203P or a Texas Star 350 HDV. From what I understand the watts goin into box needs to be 2 watts or less ? It's not sure if that is the standard for both of those or just the KL203P ?

The amps manufacturer should have information about how much input power to use. I know a lot of guys have good luck using
1 to 2 watts with the KL203P. I think most run 1 and 1/2 watts just to be safe. I would just run the Galaxy DX 959 just like it is. I have one that I use as a base station. All I did was bump the high power to the legal 4 watt limit on AM, and adjust the modulation to 100% and called it good. It sounds great on the air just by doing those 2 things to it. Unfortunately they do drift on side band until they warm up a bit. That's not an issue to me, because I don't normally start talking right away after turning my radio on anyway.
