Driving after leaving a mega....did it get better or worse?

I have never had a problem like that with any of the DM's I have worked with.

Well, once with my second DM.
I got off at around noon and I was sent a pplan that picked up at midnight.
He said I would have had 10 hours off and should be good to go, and I said I don't work like that.
I can't just fall asleep at any hour when I have only been awake a few hours.
I said no, after a while he said OK, and that was the end of it.

No repercussions, ever, for turning down loads.
But then, I have always had very good DM's that actually try to take care of their drivers.

I think it is the DM's and mentors that make people either love or hate Swift. They are Swift's greatest assets or its greatest weaknesses.
I have been fortunate in both areas, so I like my job.

Well, shouldn't we have some standards for ourselves, instead of letting everyone else dictate what standards we should live and work by?

It is said that trucking is not a job, it is a lifestyle.
It is both to me, but I am the one that sets my own limits and conditions.
And that is a concept that seems to be lost on many drivers.

Drivers are held accountable and responsible for everything that happens when they are driving.

I believe that if I am held accountable and responsible, then I should be the one that chooses the terms and conditions of that accountability and responsibility.
That includes the RIGHT to say NO to any load I am not comfortable doing within my own terms and conditions.

 

Define a mega…our company’s group has over 10,000 trucks

 

I.m now a small fleet owner we have nine trucks. I had spent 3 years at jb early in my career and a few other mega s here and there.

Some of the smaller carriers in leased on to if learned a lot from . We run only dedicated freight and is tried to incorporate the things that made sense like toll passes apus etc. We have mostly very experienced drivers 15 years plus and almost zero turnover. A good benefit package 401k match and vacation pay.

With all them fun getting parts we are building out a terminal and shop if I can close the deal this month maybe one day we will be a mini mega like 30 trucks

 

LOL. 7 days! Don’t they pay daily if you run or not?

 

No daily pay. We make money with miles.
There is layover pay if you have to wait for a load for too long.

But, at least at my company, if you turn down a load the layover pay usually goes bye-bye.

 

A Mega does not mean 'a big company.' When we speak of Megas, we're referring to JB Hunt, Swift, Werner, Knight, CR England--total garbage OTR companies with ten billion trucks that give drivers the bare minimum of training and throw them to the wolves. They're only useful for a beginning driver to get their foot in the door so they can move on to something better.

 

When I was there if you didn’t log drive time while under load on the Qualcomm you did not get the daily pay.
