Falsifying logs

I am a DOT compliance coordinator that was hired to be a consultant for a trucking company.
I have recently discovered that the trucking company has some of their drivers logging off duty under their own name and logging in under a different account, such as a supervisor account or the dummy "Unknown Mechanic" account because the driver is exceeding their hours whether it's their on-duty hours or their period hours. I clearly know this is illegal. Where do I find the repercussions and The potential finds the company could face and the driver could face if this was caught? What are the repercussions in general for falsifying logs in such a way?

 

Except for the fact that we are due for an audit and this will hit the drivers really hard, it will hit the motor carrier pretty hard and it will hit me as the DOT compliance coordinator. I am trying to find out what the repercussions are so I can address this with the motor carrier and hopefully help prevent the drivers from getting fined and charges pressed on them for falsifying logs. I realized this seems to be the norm, but I don't want to be part of it as this was not anything I dealt with at my last job.

 

I think that's what worries me and why some of the drivers has brought it to my attention because they don't want to get fined And there's got to be a way to work around it without falsifying the logs and that's what I'm trying to helpfully find out so I can address it with the motor carrier to stop this practice.

 

I have been questioning the same thing. I honestly think part of the reason they even have a DOT compliance person in this position is to make them look good and to place blame elsewhere when it catches up with them, and that's what scares me because I'm that catch all. I've only been their consultants since early May, and they've had others doing the job prior and from the sounds of it some of the stuff they've been doing they didn't know was wrong, and some of the stuff they've been doing they knew is right but supposedly said it was okay by previous DOT managers. All I know is that I am currently looking for another job but in the meantime I am fighting my hardest to protect my drivers but I've got to get all the information together so I can present it to the motor carrier and show them how this is going to hit them financially since it seems that's only way they're going to care about what they're doing.

 

Yep, I think you might be right and that's why I've been looking for another job in the meantime. I just got to figure out what I can do until I find something.
