I am a DOT compliance coordinator that was hired to be a consultant for a trucking company.
I have recently discovered that the trucking company has some of their drivers logging off duty under their own name and logging in under a different account, such as a supervisor account or the dummy "Unknown Mechanic" account because the driver is exceeding their hours whether it's their on-duty hours or their period hours. I clearly know this is illegal. Where do I find the repercussions and The potential finds the company could face and the driver could face if this was caught? What are the repercussions in general for falsifying logs in such a way?

I know a guy that owned a small trucking company years ago. They got caught doing basicly this same thing on paper logs. A couple drivers would sometimes use his name on a second log book. They got caught in an audit... The inspector discovered that the owner was supposedly in CO driving, but was somehow able to sign paychecks in ID at the same time. I cant remember what kind of fines they got hit with, but I do remember that he said it was several thousands of dollars.Dave_in_AZ, bzinger, Hammer166 and 3 others Thank this. -

Why would a trucking company hire a compliance consultant if they clearly have no intentions of being compliant?

I know my last company had drivers cheating on paper by small amounts of time when needed. They were fined over 100 k because they were warned the previous audit . Any more violations they were going to be suspended. They fired a few drivers who wouldn’t shape up and suspended anyone over on hours . It took 3 years but they are now back in the good book with inspectors. I believe the first time the fine was around 50 k due to numerous guys cheating.
