So Ive just moved to Illinois from Washington State. I have been driving for some 10 years now. When I got my CDL I remember being required to Double Clutch and that if I dont and do anything else that it would be an automatic failure because I "Could Not maintain control of the truck safely" or something along those lines. Now there is brief mention of Double Clutching in the Illinois CDL Handbook, but ive heard from a truck rental place as well as a staff member at the CDL office that you are not required to Double Clutch, that I can float the gears. Can anyone confirm if Double Clutching is required or not during the drive test?

I took my test about 5 years ago and double clutching was required

I would think if one knows how to float the gears they would know how to double clutch. The inspectors nowadays may not understand that thought process. If the DMV staff member (I would have there name readily available) told you that, I would be prepared regardless to double clutch so to pass & be on my way.

I doubt I could either. I had to learn just long enough to pass the test, it was required 29 yrs ago. Luckily my Dad taught Me. He believed the Eaton propaganda films, he saw. Also was a Trainer, so it was part of his Job I guess. When I found out he used the clutch, I couldn’t believe it. I think I’d damage my Transmission if I tried. Definitely put extra wear on clutch and driveline. I suppose if you just floated and fit the double clutch into the process, it would work.

Just tap the clutch enough to take up the free pedal and float like normal.

Tell them your CB handle is Lightfoot. Clutch foots so fast. Can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Yeah, ill err on the side of caution and practice some double clutching again, i just floated for so long its habit, im afraid ill accidently do it. and ask the tester at the time of the test what is protocol. I feel me asking the office staff about double clutching was above their pay grade and just said "yeah sure thats fine" type of thing.

You can ask the tester what he wants you to do. Now caution, he may be a nice guy and tell you what is acceptable, or, he may be a not-so-nice guy and tell you to go by the book.
