It's normal. I've never seen a used diesel filter that wasn't black. The fuel in the bowl would look black if it had oil or contaminants in it.

That’s a good point. I had a canister type fuel/water separator with the plastic bowl on bottom. That thing got nasty, sometimes like black mud. Drain was useless, as it would get plugged.

Running fuel tanks low in hot weather can cause this, hot return fuel strips the interior of aeroquip style lines and ends up in the tank

Well I picked my truck up Tuesday. I went ahead and had all the injectors changed and changed all of the fuel lines. I changed the fuel filter yesterday after driving about 1100 miles since Wednesday. Fuel was looking good. It wasn't very black to begin with but, it was a lot clearer. I drained the fuel enough to wipe the old blackness from the sides of the bowl.

When I drained the bowl the initial fuel that came out wasn't dark at all. I didn't bother having him test the injectors because I wanted them to replace them as a precaution anyways. Ill change the fuel filter at the end of the week and update.
