Any company anywhere can just close it's doors. It happens, and not just in trucking.
We had a car lot here that was open selling cars one day and closed the next, employees didn't findout until showing up for work, they had personal things in there cubicles, their tools were locked in the srvices department along with a few customers cars.

What wannabies and newbies need to realize is that when your are a trucker you can lose your job at anytime where ever you are. So, just as if you lost your local job they don't pay for a taxi or make sure you have a ride home and give you lunch money. You have to be able to get home from the farhest point from your home that your company runs. You need to build a network and keep aware of who is hiring and what your opportunities are should you lose your job.

I just talked to an Arrow drier who was out on a run when it all went down. I was expressing how bad it was that he got stranded and his reply was on of thoe tid bits I was glad to come across.
He wasn't stranded, he was prepared, had money to get home if needed, and instead of trying to get home, he got a hotel room and began to look for another job. He got one and then went home to his family.
Like he said, when you are a driver you expect the unexpected, the four wheeler to cut you off, the car or truck in front of you to hit their brakes and so forth. You expect it so you can respond to it. I always expect that I can lose my job at any time and anywhere, so I already know what I am ging to do if it happens.

Anyway, that went in my book of useful tidbits.

 

drive te truck as close to home as you can if no network in place to get you there --- maybe not the best idea but wen times are toug the tough get going
