At least for certain loads. Steel coils especially. But even dunnage and loose plastic wrap can fly off and be a hazard.

I'll guess because (using a whiny voice) "it takes too long with chains, binders and tarps being heavy".

I really enjoy opening and closing just 2 doors .... I was flat bed for a very short time when I worked driving for a construction company. I called it work. When an experienced team almost dropped a large backhoe off a trailer I new I wanted back to open and close doors again.

I think Alabama was for hauling out of the places around Birmingham because of the badly designed interstates were too easy to roll over and two trucks lost two coils over a short period of time and knocked holes in the overhead interstates downtown and they said enough was enough. No new driver should train on flat beds for a mega carrier. It's just not worth it. As for this accident, you have to start everyday as if you're gonna be charged for manslaughter for something that's not your fault. Pre trip, 50 mile load check, tire check ,150 miles etcetera.

No longer a requirement for the state, but some companies do require it.
The FMCSA shut down the state requirement

NavigatorWife, halfburn and Bean Jr. Thank this.

I'd like to know the reasoning behind that decision! Just plain stupid!
