I have been coming to these threads for over a year now doing research for the different companies I have thought about going to as a wannabe. A couple of things I have come to realize is that every trucking company seems to have some horror story written about them and that every recruiter is lying to the potential students. So I have limited my choices down to these three places but I have some questions:

Central Refrigerated seems to pay the best for your student driver pay and seems to pay the best p/m to start with but would this be a better place to go to school than for instance the Driver's Solution program?

From my reading Werner is one of the worst places to go to but is it really that bad of a place to work?

I am determined to become the best truck driver I can possibly be and want to go with a company that will train well. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

    Thanks Again

I don't have any experiences with driver solutions or werner other than what i've read, but if I were you, I would check out Millis Transfer.. they have one of the highest student pay and student starting pay there is anymore. Good company to work for. Their webpage is a little outdated, but I can tell you that the recruiter didn't lie to me about a single thing. Give them a call, you might be surprised ;)

Try using the search feature on this site. From your choices, it looks like more research may be needed !! You are located in a decent area-that's a big plus..... Good Luck !!

My choices I came up with by searching many sites. Some places I researched I do not qualify for or simply do not have the money for. Some places was simply in the wrong area. I will continue in my search though and thanks again for helping... any suggestions on other trucking companies willing to do the training and schooling necessary for me to get my CDL and become a professional driver. It is something I truly wish to succeed at.

for your first year, find whoever will take you, do your year or 2 and get on with a better company. if it's something you really want.. you may hate it at first, but better companies, it gets better. Look at it as a means to an end. I would really try Millis though.. If you can't get in there, try whoever you can and then move on after your contract is up. It's rough right now with the economy and everyone who just needs a job trying to become a truck driver. When the economy turns around most of the people like that will move back to their union or factory jobs and the companies will be begging for drivers again.

    Hello Lake Dweller,

I although I am pretty new here and the whole Trucking scene, I have been with Werner since Mid August 2009 and too be honest, I really havent experienced the horror stories you might hear on the threads. Not to say that its not true. I guess I just got really lucky.

after my 2 day orientation, I was paired up with a trainer that lived approx. 1 hour from my home. He was a bit of a pain in the ###, but I swallowed my pride and focused on the training. after 300hrs of driving with a trainer, I tested out. (which was easy) and I got a truck a few hours later......I got lucky again.

I was told that I would have to team up with another driver. I wasnt too happy, but again, I needed a job and I needed experience so I stuck with it. plus teams usually get the best equipment and usually get first pick on runs.

In early December we just got ourselves a brand new pete 386, It was a 2 day wait thanks to the "wonderful" crew at the Dallas TX terminal.

All n all, I really cant complain about Werner, I really havnt found anything yet to complain about. If I do have to complain, it would just be about the terminal crew, I hate going to terminals or requesting supplies, they are slow and for being a total noob, they do not make it easy for you to get in and out.

ive been with werner about 3 months now, was regional for about 4 weeks and then went dedicated. my only problems besides the low pay rate was initial truck issues & repairs. I basically sat in a terminal for a couple weeks until i got the truck issues sorted out. I eventually got a decent truck assigned and am up & running but the hours/pay scale is less than desirable when you do the math. when all is said and done i could probably make more money at walmart or burger king working the same amount of hours but hopefully after a years experienmce i can find a more prestigious company to work for, like superior, air products, etc... I will say if you are willing to run they will give you the miles, at least thats been my limited experience so far.

Crappy and Rum runner thanks for the advice about Werner guys I appreciate it.

My cousin told me he switched to his current company after going through Driver's Solutions after only 3 months. He did tell me he has been paying back Driver's Solution for the training they gave him but said his switch was the best thing for him. He's been with his current company for 2 years now. So all in all I guess I have more options available to me than I had originally thought.
