Greetings,
I currently live in Central Oklahoma and will soon be out of work. I'm 60 years of age and not ready to retire. It seems as I've gotten older there are less and less jobs that I am interested in doing. My interest in trucking as a last job before retirement stem from some friends (Husband/Wife) who both retired and then decided OTR trucking was something they wanted to do. Both enjoyed it and eventually retired again after nearly 8 years on the road. After hearing their stories I made a mental note of possibly looking into trucking later on. The time has come for me to look into a career change due to the abovementioned circumstances. I currently do not have my CDL or a permit for that matter, but obtaining those things doesn't seem like much of a problem. I've had family members who drove trucks for large union companies (Leeway & Transcon), yeah that should date me lol, who earned good money and the three all earned million miler watches, so I'm aware of what it takes to make it in the industry, and the sacrifices that were made to do it. Any advice I could obtain here would be greatly appreciated as I go forward.

Which city/town are you near?
Trucking is a great second career.
Do you plan to pay for cdl school or do you want a trucking company cdl school.
Some trucking companies will reimburse cdl school tuition back to you.
Every state has a program to help people change careers, such as WIOA Program/Oklahma. This program pays for cdl school; free to you.Last edited: Sep 26, 2021

I live in the Shawnee area, which is about 35 miles east of Oklahoma City. I had contacted a Knight Transportation which got me a call from Driver Resource Center on Tuesday of this week. After doing some reading and research I’m not sure that would be a good choice based on what I found. My perfect job scenario would be a regional run where I was out four days and home 3, but I don’t expect that to happen in the first year. To answer your question about paying for school, I will be able to talk more about that after I see that I'm actually going to end up unemployed and able to draw unemployment.

There's probably some regional stuff for you.
Living near OKC is to your advantage.

OK, think I found what you're looking for and it's a Teamsters job where you're vested for a pension after 5 years.
You're paid $17.50 hr. while in school.
