International DEF Sensor

We found out yesterday too about the emergency recals, but the only information so far is Cummins engines only. Navistar engines are suppose to be allowed too. We did hear that all manufactures requested this a while ago but it was the EPA and CARB that kept saying "NO!" I guess the Cummins ones will be ready next week sometime and will require a Fleet count. DEF MUST STILL BE USED. This only takes out the derates, read the PDF QualityTruck posted. In Navistar trucks, the body controller may also have to be reprogrammed to turn off the warning beeper for the DEF gauge.

 

I’ve heard some fleets might decline for safety/liability issues.

also the success rate of the calibration seems to be in question.

I found one qls for $4500 , people are just evil , taking advantage of us in bad times.. We need help with this one . Someone suggest what to do .. I am down from 3 months

 

What engine do you have? If it’s a Cummins you might be in luck. They have an emergency recall for an ECM calibration. You have to call the dealer up and they can recalibrate for you. It’s not all Cummins engines so you would have to call and verify by giving them your VIN or ESN. if it’s not a qualifying engine for the recalibration, you’re pretty much SOL.

 

@Heavyd after you do the recalibration, what exactly is the truck showing on the dash? I recalibrated an ECM and now I’m getting an SCR fault and a derate message on the dash. The red check engine light, yellow triangle light with a wrench, and a beeping noise is going off. Is this part of the calibration?

Ok, the recalibration only deals with codes 3868, 4572 and 4677. With failed QLS that log those codes, the ECM will still log it, but will not broadcast it to the dash and will not derate. So if you are getting warning lights the system must be logging other codes. IMPORTANT!!! The system still needs DEF to work. The aftertreatment will still inject DEF like normal. So this must be maintained. The system still needs to be able to prime up. The ECM now uses ambient air temp for tank temp and the ECM uses NOx conversion efficiency to determine DEF quality. To help you further, what codes are you logging, what ECM calibration code did you originally have and what did you calibrate it to?

Ok, so on Thursday 9/23/21 I calibrated the ECM from HD10301 to HD10688. All codes went away except for the 3 you mentioned. We let the truck run on Friday and the driver notified me that day that the check engine light came on and SCR LVL 1 showed up on the dash with a derate at 20%. I asked if the truck felt derated and he said it didn't. So I figured this came up because it was an effect of the 3 codes (3868, 4572, and 4677). I told him to keep running the truck and we'll look at it when he got back. Truck didn't run over the weekend or Monday. It did run Tuesday showing the same thing on the dash when the driver started his day. In the middle of his day, he said the truck showed SCR LVL 2 on the dash and a derate of 40%. When this showed up, so did the red engine light and he wasn't able to drive past 5mph. I went out to the driver and new codes logged other than the 3 were 6254, 6255, and 3712. I couldn't figure out why the SCR was having issues because the codes said they were informational derate codes. So after doing some searching on the internet, I found a post that said the ECM could just need to be recalibrated again to get rid of the codes. So I recalibrated it a second time. After the recalibration, all the check engine lights were gone, the SCR LVL 2 notification was gone and only the 3 codes (3868, 4572, and 4677) stayed. So I figured the recalibration fixed it. Driver used the truck for the rest of his day without issues. Yesterday, the driver started to have issues again with the SCR and it wouldn't let him drive past 5mph. so I went out to him and recalibrated the ECM again. This time, after calibration, all the codes were gone except for the 3, but the SCR LVL 2 message stayed on the dash with a continuous beeping. However, there weren't any check engine lights and his power was back. So he finished his day and we downed the unit until we can figure out what is going on. Every time that I went out to these drivers, I made sure I physically checked the level of the DEF and it wasn't anywhere near empty. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
