I agree with all of that, just with the caveat that that's what optimized idle CLAIMS to do.

It seems extremely frequent that the system doesn't work properly, and even when it does, starting the engine while you're sleeping is pretty bad for driver comfort and safety, given that you're waking the driver up. Everything should be focused on getting a continuous sleep if at all possible. That's how you stay alert the next day.

There are companies that focus on driver comfort and safety with more effective ways than optimized idle.

The better companies keep the Optimized Idle working as it should.
If noise is a problem, trucking isn't a wise choice of profession.
I pulled reefers for 18 years so noise isn't a problem with me, sleeping or driving.
Not every driver is cut out for living in a noisy environment and truck stops are noisy 24/7.
    Most of us sleep well.

    I sleep with reefers too.

The point is that there's more effective ways than optimized idle to keep a driver asleep and comfortable, if you look at it from the driver's perspective. Which you said was important.

My first comment on this subject was about it not being the best. Now you've changed it to me saying it's unacceptable. There's a difference.

You don't say where on the coast but Swift, Knight and Schneider all run through Lincoln City and Newport to load at that paper mill in Toledo.

I’m currently located in Newport, so thank you for this!! Any idea if any of them allow you to take the truck home while on the reset or home time?

Those paper mill accounts are all over the USA. Those are short runs and no teams.
Most companies do allow the driver to take the truck home.
Some local accounts don't because they slip-seat, which means when you're shift is over, another driver takes the truck for the next shift.

They do. It's only half the miles pay of a solo driver. I think it's like 0.335 mile per driver. With that safety bonus I think I'm at 0.68 now solo. Crete just upped everyone 0.05.

Shaffer seems to haul a lot of wine out of the north west area.

They let you take the truck home if that's what you want.

So teams through Shaffer get 1/2 the normal solo pay? So you do double miles for the same pay as solo? Am I understanding this correctly? That seems like they don’t want teams if that’s the case…

bit of a side question.. what is the typical starting pay for solo drivers outta CDL school? I’ve seen ranges from 0.29-0.62.. not sure how accurate these figures are

You get paid when you're driving and when your husband is driving.
Each driver in the team is paid for all miles the truck moves; driving, sitting in the passenger seat, laying in the sleeper berth.
Shaffer is known for way above average paychecks for teams and solo drivers.
Edit: @ekaines - my notes show you can also take 2 dogs or 2 cats with Shaffer.
