Food Lion Delivery Driver/ Adusa/ Delhaize

Hi drivers.
Does anybody else drive for Food Lion, Hannaford, Stop and Shop or any of its’ associates?
I’m currently driving for a Food Lion distribution center in North Carolina.
It’s way easier than doing foodservice since we don’t have a ramp or use hand trucks (we bump a dock and use manual pallet jacks).
Money is decent, I’m averaging about $1800.00 gross a week, 60-65 hrs per week.

 

I agree; LTL Linehaul is a great choice. I’m always eyeing the available linehaul jobs in my area which is in Charlotte, N.C.
Very good chance I’m going to be re locating to Maine next year; maybe I’ll be looking for a linehaul gig in that area soon.

The one really good reason for grocery, as compared to LTL is consistancy and relative job security. I’m 60 years old and I’ve seen my share of some really heavy duty layoffs in the past; some pretty brutal with nowhere to go as far as job replacement. I suppose that never leaves the back of my mind. Comparing the two, however, and as far as the actual working conditions are concerned, I’ve always preferred LTL ( both city delivery and linehaul) to grocery delivery.

I know what you mean about the upper management, things haven’t changed much since you left, I’m sure. The one thing that might be different though are the starting times; new drivers now usually start at about 1:00 PM, maybe 2:00 PM at the very latest.
All the guys that you asked about may or may not still be there; not sure because no one really seems to go by handles anymore.

 

The OTR guys are definately treated like dirt; not right at all, especially since the Distribution Center depends on them for survival.
The Food Lion drivers are treated better, though sometimes it doesn’t allways feel that way.
As far as starting times, there are very few Mon-Fri shifts, even for the guys with a lot of seniority. Every week is different then the previous week as far as scheduled days off, and about every three weeks, everyone eventually gets a Saturday and Sunday off.
Some weeks you will work 6 days in a row (with no overtime at all) and some weeks, you will work 3 days, get 1 day off, then 4 days, with 4 days off, etc. It’s kinda wierd but it allways works out that everyone works a 5 day work week, every week.
The goal is to get as early of a shift as possible since all assigned runs usually are filled by early evening.
The new guys usually start at 1-2 PM. You want to get at least 2 runs minimum per day, if not, then your’e not making much money.
Starting at 1-2 PM can be ‘iffy’ because you might get a second run, or you might not, especially during the slower times.
