Hello! I have an issue concerning a ThermoKing tripac apu (don't we all) and I can't quite figure out the solution to it.

When I first power on the apu, it runs for about 3-4 minutes and then shuts off and throws an 'alt' code. When I clear the code and run it again, it runs for only 2 minutes, shuts off, then throws the exact same code. The alternator gets very hot, so I am wondering if this has something to do with it overheating.

However, this is a brand new alternator. My old alternator had a battery overcharge issue, so I went ahead and purchased a new one. After installing the new alternator, I got this issue that I am describing here. (I actually ended up using my warranty and returning the new alternator, after installing and seeing the issue, with another brand new one, but the exact same issue was occurring.

I also have a brand new ECM, fuel pump and fuel filters. I am absolutely lost as to what this issue could be. The alternator that I am using is a 14.5V 65A.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I have strong feeling alternator connected in reverse polarity.

Hm... reasoning behind it? I'm confused as to how that would even be possible. The plug can only be inserted one way and I haven't tinkered with the harness at all.

You also should have a wire to the B+ on the alternator and a ground.
Use a multimeter and check voltage at battery and B+. If more than a couple tenths difference check all connections and wiring from there to battery for damage. There’s a wire in the harness you mentioned that goes to the B+. It should be the same voltage as the B+.

Check the alternator fuse. On the old ones there is a maxi-fuse holder (50A) in the main battery lead to the alternator that gets crusty and burnt up. Originally it's located in a hard to access location down low inside the case. The service kit relocates it to the top of the case, and comes with the necessary pieces to mount it.

Also check your battery cable terminals on both ends. There are 6 ends to check (3 cables, either 1 or 0 AWG so big ones). Battery + to starter solenoid, starter solenoid to alt B+ (has 50A fuse), and battery neg to engine ground. Don't just "look" at them, take them off, clean them, if you see any moss growing where the crimp is, replace the terminal.

also check the battery cable going to the main battery on the truck. if this battery is going bad or has issues. then apu can throw Alt code too.

Yeah what you say is missed all the time.

if there is a voltage issue, especially with an alternator …

the very first thing is to confirm there is an actual voltage problem AT THE BATTERIES

    AND

CHECK YOUR GROUNDS, ALL OF THEM!
