I think a large part of the "problem" with "people killed by their own guns" is basic stupidity.
Recommendations - in no particular order:
1) Practice practice practice. By the time that weapon clears the holster, it should be ready to fire. Sadly, I've seen numerous people draw, then spend precious seconds trying to figure out the safety.
2) The time to hesitate is BEFORE you draw.
3) There is no such thing as "shoot to wound"
4) Once that weapon clears the holster, bring the weapon to bear and pull the trigger. This, and item 1, is the place most failures occur. Pointing the weapon is not an effective threat. *Firing* the weapon may be. But for a weapon of any nature to be effective, it must be used as intended.
5) Pay attention to your environment. Use your eyes and brain. Avoid situations that place you at risk.
6) Ask for police presence if you feel the area requires it - most departments will be happy to assist.

Thank God my pistol does not have an external safety. This is my safety (trigger finger).

I dont think anyone mentioned anything about crossing back and forth into Canada..I know when you come back across into buffalo, they can pull you aside and x-ray your truck.Thats one to look into..The problem with with getting rid of all the red tape, would be like allowing highschool kids to protect themselves against columbine type attacks..Now dont knock me for this one..I am ALL ABOUT GUNS!..And I wouldnt compare drivers to highschool kids...But in a situation like this you couldnt just open the flood gates..We are all adults, and there would be people you could trust to be wise about it..But we also know for every bushell of good apples, there are a some bad ones..With the way drivers are today,I would prefer they not be given the green light to carry whatever they want..With everything that gets said on the cb,i could only imagine how much the whole situation would get worse...I think it would turn into the wild west..Guns have their purpose...But guns also give you a testosterone boost, and to much testosterone makes people do stupid things..

Well that's when you hide the gun in a lead box

WTF!
Are you serious?!? It's CA, so I believe it. Next thing illegal will be black trucks

But pink ones will be legal! ROFLMFAOPIP!

Look at it this way: it's a self-correcting problem.
or, as (I forget who) said, an armed society is a polite society -
so much for ammendment number 2!! i mean it's the right to bear arms. and if you drive otr, that is YOUR home. there shouldnt be a law against it..how we ever gonna make a citizen's arrest if we're not allowed to be prepared for some low-life thug who doesnt have anything to loose by putting a nine to your head after just listening to a rap song about how they kill suckas..lol. truckers should be treated with more respect and allowed to look out for themselves better, since we are the back-bone of this planet!! and by the way..those weapons that are used to kill hard working people such as truckers...were probably brought here by truck.
