I can definitely attest to that. After mine fell off, it was a whole different machine. Much more reliable.

You’re right about the after treatment though — it’s the same as the Cummins. I believe even the turbo is proprietary to Cummins. What’s odd is the number of shops that still won’t touch a MX.singlescrewshaker, jamespmack, Flint1 and 9 others Thank this. -
I know a few guys that run it, one in a 389 and another in a T680. Both get pretty good fuel economy. 7.0’s and still have some pedal when they need it on hills.
I have also heard not a lot of shops touch them MX’s. Something about the filters are different and you need a new drain plug every time.singlescrewshaker, jamespmack, Lostkeys and 5 others Thank this. -
The machining is a bit tricky due to compacted graphite iron construction but other than that it's a pretty straight forward engine. Cam in block, etc, etc.
The filters are definitely not something to go aftermarket on. There's a spinner filter that separates the oil from other particles, it spins at a pretty good speed, aftermarket filters spin backwards and unscrew the spinner bearing in the filter cap. This can lead to failures due to lack of oil flow. And some may say new drain plug but we still have the original one to the truck when we got it.
