i am just wondering, are any of you folks out there still running the o'l b models and if so,what are some of the little tricks ya'll have done to extend the life of them. i bought mine in '96 from a grain farmer neighbor who bought it new in'90 and only hauled for himself for 6 years,so i know it's maintenance history since new,i hauled my own grain and feed for the dairy for 9 more years before turning the dairy over to my son and going hopper o/o so i know it's been taken good care of, i have 477,000 miles on it . Now i know it's old,and if you want to make fun of me for runni'n such an old truck with the mechanical fuel pump, thats fine, just climb on,i've got wide shoulders, but i have found out you folks here have a lot of wisdom and i would just like to hear some of your ideas on extending the engine life? thanks in advance for any responses!

It's about due for rod bearings , Who's gonna make fun of a mech cat? the guy on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck cause his electrified wonder freaked out cause of some dust in a connector. Pulling trucker added a Spinner 2 centrifuge to his 550 there is a thread on here about the details. you prolly want to add some kind of fuel lube. I just split a litre of 2 stroke oil between my tanks for my 3406C you run high efficiency filters right. You should also replace your vibration damper with a 3406E style fluid filled damper. they should be changed at 500K anyway and being 20 year old. mine let go at about 300k 17years (my truck is an 88 but the "crate C went in in 94 but never got a lot of miles. there is a lot of 3406 mechanical discussion on thedieselgarage Heavyduty forum

I'm looking at a 91 pete with a ol 3406b cat in it the truck is super clean paperwork on the engine rebuild as well .keep us posted!

1989 Pete,...mine has been trouble free for the most part,i just like the simplicity of it,plus i have a mech. freind that just retired 2 years ago from cat with 34 years experience and he said he cut his teeth on the b model, but these folks on this forum have a lifetime of handy-hints on better maintenence and i wus hoping to tap into some of that stuff, like Longhood379 posted. sounds like i need to give 550 a shout,he must know about e'm too. good luck with the '91,let me know if ya get 'er

those old b models will run forever trouble free with good maintainance, but you want to be careful not to ever get it hot.
dairyman Thanks this. -
I've got a B in my silage truck. It's a 92 KW with 1.2 million. Dropped a valve about 30k ago, did a major overhaul, other than that it's been a good motor.
dairyman Thanks this. -
i run a double fuel filter on mine. i have a racor fuel/water seperator with a 20 micron filter and a cat filter, i think they go down to something in the 5 range, i could be off, on that. clean fuel is really important on a cat. bearings as has been stated. if you see water in the weep hole on the water pump, go ahead and replace it. better to do it at your leisure. some had plastic impellers that would spin on the shaft. keep a watch on the exhaust studs, they will give up the ghost. you can do this job yourself if you are lucky enough to spot that they are missing. going doing the road many years ago, and my ex manifold nearly fell off. hope this helps some, johnny
dairyman Thanks this. -
good advice,lastgoodusername,...i run 2 filters on mine too,my mech told me about the plastic impellers so i have been keeping an eye on it,never heard of the ex.studs being a problem but i look e'm over now, thanks! keep all the good info coming, folks, this is what i wus looking for!
