Good post...I know GF is just trying to warn those that don't know but geez...there's a right way and a wrong way of doing it, and his way certainly isn't the right way. It's like he's hates truckers and CBers but just won't say it...I have heard though he's gotten kicked off other CB boards for posting some of what he posts.
Anyways again good post, going to hopefully be getting my tech license in Jan then I can join in the convo on 2 meter and 70 cm...see how I like it, maybe I'll upgrade from there. I'll still have my "legal" Cobra 21 but I'll be selling my "illegal" SS158 to buy a ham rig.![]()

Im going for my general in jan cant wait! Do you have a rig you are looking at for your first ham rig. I recommend yaesu! great rigs i have owned many, they are inexpensive but not cheap! the ft 7800 is a great duel bander for little money! good luck on the test!

May the force be with you
Both my brothers and myself have extra class and my wife a General class.
Bands like 17 meters are good for world wide DX with 100 watts and a simple dipole I run 100 watts on 20 meters into a trap vertical and have no problem being heard.
My oldest radios are over 50 years old and still in use I also use a 7800 and it is one fine radio ..... and enough HT's to last a lifetime they are like chips you just can't have just one
I don't get on 6 as much as i would like too but maybe later this year i can make some dx time starting with the January ARRL contest.Attached Files:

my 8900 covers 6 2 440 and 10 meter fm. its a good radio but its 400 and some change brand new, you must be lookinig at a hand held vx 6 or 7 it sounds like.
-
I love the 7800, im about to buy my buddies, i miss mine since i sold it, the 8900 is a great rig with the cross band repeat it helps with functions where a hand held just wont cut it. i like your ft 100 i believe that is i was trying to get one before i picked up this icom ic 751 (non Alpha version) when i get my general ill hit you up on 20 meters, my brother is going for his tech when i go for my general, as a gift im giving him a 60 watt adi mobile for getting his ticket! 73!

It's actually aYaesu FT-7900R.I think I was wrong about 6 meter coverage but it does do 2 m and 70 cm.
-
I DO NOT recomend a FT-100 it is NOT suported and the finals are $300.
You made a good move with that ICOM .....
The IC-706 is now a discontuned radio sadly I love mine and it gets a lot of use. ..... ADI 2 meter yep I have one somewhere if he is going to run it on high power put a fan on the heat sink .....
I bought a TS-2000 to run on 2 SSB it is not very good however gives you a ham shack in a box Kenwood is working on a replacement in 2011. -
as far as the 7900 it is just like the 7800 just the updated version, (identical as far as internal) which is an awesome rig i recommend it, the menu gets a little trick id get the programming software , thats wqhat i did makes it easier to program, the ft 100 i was refering to was the NEW ft 100 not the old tube type,
-
THE NEW FT100 or 100D is what I have AVOID THEM ....
You will see many on ebay that they avoid telling you about the VHF/UHF transmitter since the FINALS ARE BLOWN .....
This radio used a very expensive final about 300 dollars for the pair THEY ARE NO LONGER MADE
Both me and my brother have one and BABY them since you don't get a 2nd chance if you pop them ....
