Coming home from dropping in Phoenix and loading in Douglas Arizona I was coming across 40 near the Texas Oklahoma line and saw a Brokedown big truck on the right shoulder. the service truck was in the grass to the right of the big truck on the right shoulder and as I passed I watched what appeared to be the tire guy walk around into the travel lane and put what I think was either an 8 x 8 or 6 x 6 block of wood about 14 inches high in the travel lane about 2 feet from the white line. I tried to pull a still from the dash cam tied into the electronic logs but couldn’t get it to work. I’m assuming this is done to thwart those that don’t move over for the flashing lights. Not quite sure how I feel about this as I do feel for those guys working roadside but it definitely was a new one on me. I do obey Move over slow down laws but there have been times when I can’t get over and even striking that block at 15-25 miles an hour could cause severe damage. Anybody else seen this done? One time I did have a repair guy come out and he kept several large washers in his pocket and he said that when the cars were not moving over if he was under the vehicle or around the vehicle he would chuck the washer at the car. Can’t say that I blame him for that but the block in the lane seems a step beyond the washers in the pocket
Move over, slow down, or else……????

If the truck will not absolutely move then I understand using the shoulder, if it moves, even at 5mph get it to a freaken exit ramp, stay off the shoulder. Way too many people using shoulders these days, this goes for 4 wheelers too. Chucking things at vehicles isn't cool, in some cases moving over might not be an option if someone is right next to you, and who is he to determine whether you slowed down enough for his liking.

The chucking really wasn’t the issue, it was the block of 6x6 in the road. Then there’s the issue if you’re limping down the shoulder or right lane with a flat that you can get in trouble with Johnny Law

Honestly, I don't care about the law. I care about my safety and insurance rate. And yeah putting the block in the road isn't cool either, if someone hits it and ends up crashing guess who they're going to come look for?Dave_in_AZ, just_sayin and bzinger Thank this.

I think it’s a symptom of the coarsening of our society. Law of unintended consequences when the government tries to regulate common sense through law. Try to practice common sense and you run afoul of laws. The roadside guy may have had one too many close calls and decides to take matters in his own hands. I’ll put my soapbox away now

Certain jobs come with certain risks. I'm sure he's seen plenty of close calls. I try to move over whenever I can first, if not I will slow down, but stopping on the shoulder for whatever reason has become so commonplace as soon as you get back over and back up to speed here's yet another person on the shoulder. It's frustrating.

I’ve had a tire guy use a 6x6 piece of wood to have me pull up on to change a tire. Maybe that’s what he was in the process of doing?

No he definitely sat it upright in the travel lane on the opposite side of where he had his service truck pulled.

The block of wood on the road seems like a pretty shady thing to do. I certainly see his frustration with people not moving over but come on, he has to expect a few people to not be able to move over. If it bothers him that much he should find a new job.

I don't know I had some ####### in Arkansas laying half way in the right lane in the middle of the night, and 3 dirty traffic cones I mistook for trash at first.
Wouldn't have pissed me off as much if he would have atleast put the flashers on but nope. Guess he wanted to gamble. Lucky for him I pay attention to what's infront and BEHIND ME.
I could have switched lanes and the ####### tailgating me would have plowed through him. Instead I have to make traffic stop and hope someone else doesnt run into us. (Left lane full of cars that see my blinker and ignore it even with me giving em the squeeze)
Not all service guys are playing with a full deck if you get what I mean.nredfor88, Nostalgic, bzinger and 1 other person Thank this.
