Hi All,
Just curious if you guys know of any DOT/FMCSA regulation that says if a person is over their BMI, then they have to get a sleep test??? I went for a DOT physical earlier today, and the nurse practitioner doing the exam said since I was over on my BMI, she would only sign off on a 1yr cert and I would have to do a sleep study within that 1 yr. I've had about 6 DOT physicals over the past 6 yrs, and not once has the doc said anything about BMI and me needing a sleep test because of it. Personally, I think this woman and the hospital she works for are going overboard. When I asked for her to present the regulation that says my BMI prevents me from getting a 2yr cert and requires me to get a sleep test, she left only to come back and shoo me out of the exam room saying the next person was waiting for it LOL.
The medical profession is outta control IMO. First they wanna hook everybody to pills, then they want to act like what they think or say is above reproach.
Does the FMCSA require sleep tests if over on BMI???

Find a different practitioner. Those draconian measures are not part of the FMCSA rules.

It's not a requirement but most dot doctors act like it is. The FMSCA tried to push through the requirement a few years ago but didn't do it properly. So now its up to the doctors discretion. Most require it I'm sure just because if there was an accident and they didn't require it they would be sued also.

First of all. If you don't have sleep apnea. Should be no big deal to get a sleep study done. Secondly, as mentioned. It's the doctor's discretion, not a reg, and your company requires you to use this doctor.
Seems simple. Follow directions or find a different company.
With the number of drivers falling asleep and killing people. Don't seem like a bad thing to test. -

I am 5'8. About 185 lbs. I'm not one they would consider or profile to have sleep apnea. My belly got a little big but nothing crazy. I don't have a big neck and look pretty fit in general. Apparently my tounge is a little big for my mouth which causes my airway to close sometimes. Again nothing crazy but enough to where I got a cpap. The fact that they are profiling people is nuts. Sure I get tired tired. I was a metal fabricator working in a hot shop 12 hours a day. Bet your ### I get tired. It's hard to breath with a stuffy nose and allergies for some. I feel much better having my machine and probably function better more than most. But for cdl purposes I'm a leopard because I have it.

It's a double edged sword, 8 years ago I had to get a sleep study because of my neck size, required by concentra who is the company required place. I was found to have NON obstructed sleep apnea because my O2 sats were 94% instead if 95%. I have had a cpap for 8 years and have been tired during the day ever since. Tiredness was never an issue till I got a cpap. I forgot to mention I have excellent union benefits through my wife's job.......I'm sure that may figure into it also.
