2 week orientation is for the guys straight out of driving school. Experienced drivers are in orientation for a week at most.

I'll tell you this much, from what I have seen in real time from TMC is appalling, I was loading at a large steel shipper in C.T. now at tis particular place they are strapped for space, when You actually get to the loading area out back You have to wait for an forklift operator to tell You where to be, You proceed to tat spot and then get loaded and strap off, usually slinky's but can be mesh at times too.It was late in the afternoon, I was told to go to a certain spot by the lift operator,I did and he proceeded to load me, as he did I started to strap off, I had a full strec of slinkys which requires some time to do right, I was pulling straps through on my right side, and all of a sudden hear a truck coming behind me, now mind You there was about 10 FT. of space between my right side and stored coils piled about 6 high,I looked to see what was coming and it was the TMC truck that was beind me in line, and he was moving at an alarming rate,I really thought the driver did not see me even though I had a safety vest and HHat on, I had to get under my trailer to avoid getting crushed, the driver of the TMC truck parked it with about 7 inches of space between our trucks, needless to say I was a bit heated and asked didn't You see me, the driver replied Yeah I saw You but You are taking too long to strap of and we don't have time, this was a trainer talking to me and his(student)was in the pass side..I asked if the fork lift OP, told him to move and he replied that TMC had basically run of that Yard,I could see where this was going so I continued to strap off, when the lift OP came back he was puzzled by the position of the trucks and asked what happened, I told him, and then at the scale house was questioned again as they looked at the tape of the incident. About a month later I actually got a letter of apology from the Steel Company, what got me was this guy was a trainer, ###### near killed me due to him being in a rush, this is what he was teaching his student,..Just a note these guy's were in such a rush, they left there with a full strech of slinkys, and they were all strapped over, not through and wrapped around just thrown over, I wonder if they made it to their destination.

What is the point of this thread???? A company is bad because it has a strict pre employment process????
Maybe we all should move to communist China where we are guaranteed a job! Or maybe the airlines should lower their pilot entrance exams so more get jobs.... now go buy that airline ticket and good luck. Take responsibility for your decisions and actions and stop looking for the easy route. Dumbing down is killing this country and this industry, wonder why truck drivers don't get any respect anymore? Stupid stupid thread. (and NO I don't work for TMC, but i applaud them for having high standards)
    My 2cents.

I don't understand ? I thought you had to earn a job in this business. I mean swifts orientation a week and we had people let go on the last day. we started with six and actually ended with 3 1 quit, 1 was sent home and 1 just disappeared. I seen him later and he said he couldn't pass the driving test so he just left without trying? wasn't hard if you passed the cdl dive test you should pass thier test.

I dont see why i see people saying every otr company is like this. For example, i went to orientation at covenant, but got sent home (because i was a defendant in a criminal case...aka a criminal, guilty until proven innocent, you know). And i've heard a lot of stories about TMC. But covenant was the total opposite, i remember taking tests and basically being told what answers to write down!

Heh. Nucor Steel in Wallingford right? That's about the epitome of cheap flatbed freight at least for us who were on percentage.

That trainer was an idiot. Being a jerk in a shippers yard is an excellent way to get your company tossed out altogether. Just try that in an Alcoa plant. I had a great trainer when I started (truck #790, "Plan B", since retired). From the sounds of his securement, this bozo should have never made it out of DSM in a truck, let alone teaching someone else how to do it.

Yeah thats right, I was driving for Kennedy then, mileage pay, never been in there as an owner operator, and that is the reason why, I can actually get a better rate pulling an MT container, which makes no sense at all, (to me at least) considering that their freight takes some doing to ride right. Just my opinion.

Having said that, I can't find anything here in the northeast that pays anything what it should, and is the reason I just left the carrier I was signed on to and am going to try something different, at least for me, which is Van work, for a company that does allot out of paper mills up north, they have given me some figures, which of course sound ok but who knows what the real deal will be, the one I just left gave me good figures too, and they were for the first 2 to 3 weeks then it all went south and fast, SO this is my last attempt to make this work and if it dosen't oh well, was not for lack of effort thats for sure, any way it will be nice to spend the rest of the winter not having to Tarp and strap, will be the first time for me not having to work like that in many years, Wish me Luck Guy's!
