We have always had a 1985 GMC Brigadier on the farm for hauling grain and it has the 671 Detroit Diesel. Just wanted to start a conversation here about this engine. I know a lot of people LOVE the sound of the ol engine. Ours has the 7 SPD Spicer transmission and my brother hated driving it cause it was a pain to drive compared to our heavy duty semi's. It SUCKED on horsepower - loaded VERY easily. Does anyone know if these had governors? Something is crazy wrong with the HP on it because you can stall the truck on a hill much easier than other trucks. The engine was rebuilt right after we got it just to start fresh and maybe the mechanic didn't set it up correctly???
How was your experience driving with these engines???

No power but sounded like a race car.

Our thoughts exactly. Makes me wonder how they ever hauled over the road with them. Ours used to be a car hauler...and I've seen a lot used to pull carnival rides...and maybe a few gravel haulers which I bet had to be a small pile of gravel to ever get it delivered on time.

Learned to drive on one of these. 2 speed rear, single axle. Certainly no powerhouse. We primarily used it for a lot jockey and transporting trailers that needed service about an hour away. It liked them empty for sure and you could tell when they wernt.

I used drive one in the city. Same 7 spd. Fun to drive, high revving it, the sound turned a lot of heads, only to see an old junky Truck, Lol. No torque at all when loaded. Had to really drive it hard, to make it go. Smooth spring ride, and easy manual steering. Made for a good local Truck. Much easier to Drive than the Fords. They were very hard to turn, and spring suspension would beat you to death. I liked the fuel tank w/ built in step. I’d walk/step straight out of it. Got in a Ford once, and out of habit tried to step straight out, bounced on my ### hit the ground. Lol. Good simple engine though, lasts forever. Mine leaked 2 gallons of oil per day from rear main. Blew turbo, hit the shoulder and shot flames 15’ from the stack. Left a big black ring on the underneath overpass Lol. Drive it another 10 miles to the yard, after waiting for a couple hrs. A fresh inframe at 3 mil Miles. Good as new.

What turbo? 238 didn't have a turbo, it was a gear driven blower.

Drove a 66 kw wrecker with one, not too bad empty. Would go home in it, kill it , go in the house go to bed and could still hear the darn thing running. That was in the 55 mph days.

My first truck I owned was a 1970 GMC. Got a deal on, I figured if being an O/O doesn’t work out, I wasn’t out of pocket much. Insurance was cheap back then, $1200 premium for a year. .70 cents a gallon for fuel. Anyways, it had the famous 671 with a 10 speed 3 axle. It did the job pulling cans out of the port and piggy’s out of the rail. Screaming Jimmy’s is what they where called.
