I drove an old Ford straight Truck a bit. It had a big box. Maybe 34’ or 38’. Gasser, I think they called it an 8 spd. trans. 2 spd dual axles and tires. They called it the Ginsburg Truck. Short heavy pick ups. Mainly moved frozen beef from storage a few blocks away, to processing plant. Australian Beef. We called it Kangaroo meat. I was the youngest Driver out of 12. Low man. 23 yrs old, and a Teamster!! Living the dream. $7.75 an hr. $10.50 was top pay. No one could Drive it, the 2 spd kept getting stuck between gears. Had to be towed in a couple times. At the end of every day, I fueled Trucks, Working an old Sinclair Gas station, right across the street. Old man who Owned it for years, looked and talked exactly like Scatman Cruthers, He went to work for them, but had got sick, that’s how I got the job. I checked oils, tires, spot Trucks Friday’s for mobile wash crew. Parking all 13 vehicles in a tight garage storage. Good for 12-13 hrs OT every week. Others complained about only getting 38 hrs. while I’m getting 50. Not fair!! I reminded them, they could fuel Trucks every night. Oh No!! I’m not doing that!! The old Fords 2 spd would get stuck on me too sometimes. I’d crawl underneath and hammer it along. No one could understand how I could make it shift without any problems. Lol. I told them, I just read the pattern and followed it. That was true. I used to float the gears on the little meat wagons. F450s 600s, mostly F700s Older Guys Would freak out. Your gonna ruin the trans!! One Driver told our Dispatcher. I got chewed out for it Lol. On a side note, the Old Man got better. Diabetes had taken half his foot. He must have been at least 75 yrs old. He came back to work, doing light maintenance. His 35 yr. old wife also got a job there, after a few yrs. she left him for a younger co worker. He shot and killed her right at work. Standing in the middle of the street, while surrounded, everyone pleaded for him to put down the Gun. He said, I’m not going to Prison for that B####. Blew his brains out. Glad I wasn’t working there to see that, I liked both of them very much. And that’s today’s edition of American True Life Tragedies. Brought to you by Memory Lane Productions.Speed_Drums, MACK E-6, LoSt_AgAiN and 5 others Thank this.
