If the trucking industry is bad why are a lot of companies hiring drivers?

To start you have to have a job to start at . There have been a lot of posts here by CDL school graduates that never got hired . But I can see you are one of those that ignores the obvious and has to learn the hard way .

My reply may seem unrealistic, or pessimistic, but look around. There have always been trucking companies that will lie to and steal from drivers. Today's mega carriers have just perfected the scam. It burns me up to see the way new drivers are being abused and taken advantage of because of the economy. There are some sucess stories, but far too many sad stories to suit me.
What is happening at the training companies is unethical at the best, and illegal and immoral at worst. Many peoples lives have been ruined by these companies. It's true that some new "drivers" are not capable of the job they are given. A decent company would see this and weed them out at training. They do not because there is too much money to be made off of the less intelligent.
Read the threads here and you will see what happens to newbies. You can pick out the difference between the truth and a disgruntled driver. You can also tell the difference between someone that did not have the intelligence to start with, and should have been weeded out, and someone that has been shafted. -
Thank you for the great response. Pennsy.
Even though I'm a new member, I've been a guest here for the last 6 months reading extensively about what a lot of you are saying. I just recently joined to get my questions answered. Thanks.
The company I'm interested in has made an agreement they will hire after school and training provided you recieved a conditional hiring letter.Last edited: Dec 28, 2009
kickin chicken Thanks this. -
Yes I did read this on the board.

They hire because they have the trucks and by having drivers sitting all over the country waiting for loads they increase the chances of getting said load. They have to pay for the truck anyhow so why not have it out and ready?
And this is from a driver manager at Trans-Am who will remain nameless to protect his job.dancnoone Thanks this. -
Finally...something honest from you

Fixed that post!

Is that a fancy way of saying you have a pre-hire ? Those letters are pure BS . They have no way of predicting you will master the minimum driving skills required at school . Many newbies fail the driving test . Others fail the agility test . We have too many members reporting they were unjustly rejected by a trainer . Like many have said , if you get hired if will be to replace someone that came in a few months ago with the same determination you have now .

Another reason for the continual hiring is that companies are cleaning up their driver pools. Getting rid of the guys with multiple speeding tickets and accidents and replacing them with cleaner MVR's. It's an insurance cost decision: the better their driver pool the better rates they can negotiate from their insurance carrier.
JustSonny Thanks this.
