Warm-up procedures when starting from a cold start?

Most on here probably don't know what you're talking about.
Go to start the pony and of course it would be out of gas , dead battery
,finally ge it started and didn't let big engine spin long enough with compression release and kill the pony. Then start over.
No I don't miss them. But thanks for the memories.

 

Start the pony, turn the big engine half speed with compression released, get back in the pickup, pour a cup out of the Stanley thermos, enjoy the coffee and bs with with co-workers and let it warm up slowly. Then, kick it high speed, add compression, fuel, and kill the pony. Make sure to shut the gas off, and go back and finish your coffee. Life was good and we weren't in so much of a hurry all the time.

Edit to Add: You didn't need to worry about the battery because you could hand crank them. I'll admit the kickback on the crank of a 17A could be brutal though.

 

I low idle Untill the temp gauge reads about 50-70. Then high idle until about 125. Then ease on out to the highway. Once I see 170ish its go time.
For cool down. If running the moutains the last 30 mins I take it easy. 55-60 mph. Then roll in and park. Idle about 10-15 mins. I hardly ever shut it off over 200 degrees

 

Never go in cold. You have to warm her up. Usually a nice dinner. Some wine and music. Then some cuddling with kisses. But you never want to go in cold. That could cause some friction burns. LOL

 

Gotta use 1st or 2nd gear...Then ya can get 4 or 5 months on a starter...

 

Anyone remember the compression release on Cummins?

Yep. Still got three of them running with one. Two 743’s and one 855.
There are also still lots of old yellow dozers down here with pony motors.

 

I’ve got a 2004 CAT bridge motor. It’s getting down into the 20s overnight so I usually start it then after 30 seconds or so I bump the idle up to 900 for 25 minutes plus or minus. Figure to do this during the winter as well. Usually by the time I roll the temp is 140/150…don’t know if that’s good or bad.

This is my first truck. As a company driver I was told to start it and go, those were new trucks though and supposedly were designed to do that…or so I was told. I’m taking it easy on my kitty cat since I own it and all repairs associated with it lol

 

It appears that I have aged myself.
