Hi everybody. I just finished watching the 60 Minutes piece about the ports of LA and Long Beach. They said that drivers are frequently waiting - and often not allowed - to return empty cans, and that it often depends on what color can a driver happens to have on his/her chassis.

So my question is simply this: what is the significance of the color of any given container?

    Thanks in advance.

Probably the companies that have space to store empty containers , and most companies have all their cans painted the same Color

I guess I don't understand why the port would accept empty cans of one color but not another. Do companies rent storage space from the port?

My guess would be that it depends on who owns the cans. Maybe certain ones need to be returned or are waiting to get loaded? I know some cans are one way and others are return load but I’m not sure if the color matters or not or if it’s how they designate them.

If it was on ‘60 minutes’, chances are good they got maybe 15% of the situation correct.

Steamship line owned boxes have uniform color schemes, sometimes alternating color/label colors.

Spec built 'lease' boxes are mostly the same brown color and are used by everybody; however some are long term leased back to a major for 5 years at a time so the actual color may be meaningless.
