If that is the worst problem with the truck, I would not be too concerned, just try to keep it clean.

Yea man! I got lucky with it, I’ve learned a lot over the past 20 years and wanted to do my own thing since COVID-19 hit, mainly to stay away from people. I got the truck cheap hoping I could fix it by myself. I changed everything I could within my budget. I took a chance and put a 50/50 mix of oil and diesel in it, closed my eyes and started it and let it high idle for 10 min and it looked like tar when drained, I tore it down to the head bolts cleaning and checking everything best I could, put it back together flushed it out and started running it, got lucky I guess. The leak has always been there it’s not gotten better or worse. I don’t think it’s ever been rebuilt, probably close to 2 million on it but the bull gear is tight

You really don’t need any special tooling to replace the two seals. I worked at a Ftl dealership shop for years and replaced literally scores of them. They stated out paying I think 10 hours, as we got faster they cut it to 6 and I think even less. Could still do it in 2 1/2 hours regularly.

That’s good to know I was just scared to get it out of time and bought the camshaft locking tool. Thanks for the info

Just for future reference, you cannot get it out of time. There is not enough room inside the gear case of the 12.7 cover for the cam gear to disengage the mating gear and rotate. The old DDEC II cases were different inside and could be gotten out of time if not careful. Be sure to put cloth rags or use a magnet to prevent dropping either of the two cam thrust plate bolts into the gear case.

Good detroit guy can change that diamond seal in a few hours. You do not have to disassemble front cover. Does take some patience.

if you can get a Baby Diaper zip tied or held with a bungie cord at the Leak ...it will keep the oil from blowing back on everything..I had to use 5 diapers turned inside out ...But I limped it home without being put OOS ...
