Past two weeks have been working with recruiter from Driver Solutions for PAM. I realize PAM isn’t the best choice, but I’m willing to do the year contract for no up front cost cdl tuition .
Seems too good to be true ,them not running a credit background check? Will a criminal record for assault 16 years ago affect my chance of them sponsoring me?

    Chinatown Thanks this.

    Criminal record won't hurt you.
I don't know of any trucking company sponsored cdl schools that run a credit check.
Some schools do run credit checks if you don't already have a job lined up.

PAM isn't bad, I drove for them. I didn't go through Driver Solutions but I know plenty of people who did. The money isn't great there but it's a starter company. They never tried to short me and they take maintenance seriously. If you can roll miles you'll get miles. If you screw around on the road though they'll park you in a drop lot somewhere for a week and forget about you.

I personally know someone who went the DS-PAM route a few years back. If its still the same, PAM forces you to team for the first few months... that is, you and another rookie living in a truck that is rolling 20 hours per day.

I wouldn't put my sleeping life in the hands of another rookie.

I recently (within last 60 days) spoke with another driver who went through PAM and stuck out 10 months until he couldn't bear it anymore. He said his take-home was between $400-600 per week. I guess they don't call them "Poverty And Malnutrition" for nothing.

If you absolutely can't get a grant or loan for CDL tuition independent of an indentured servitude contract, I would actually suggest SFIWT. While people like to talk crap about them, they do give newbies actual, valuable training and are honest about their pay. Stick it out for 6-9 months, then start looking around from there. I would avoid contract-for-training at all costs.

Shop around some more before making a final decision.
Stevens Transport does urine drug test.
Swift does hair follicle drug test.

Fun fact: Last year, the average OTR pay was around $47k, while the average advertised pay was $75k.
