My hubs just started in the industry, we didn't know about these boards until just a couple hours ago, so he's working for one of the "bottom dwellers" as you all call them... I wish we had found these forums before he started his training with the company he is hooked into...but that's like saying I wish it wouldn't rain when the clouds are heavy. There's nothing to change it.
He was rushed off to the training center so fast that we didn't have time to do much research or ask many questions about what he was going to be doing. His foremost thought was "There's always going to be a need..." so he swept right into it... This leaves me home with our 3 beautiful and very miscreant daughters. It also leaves me with a lot of questions... the biggest of which at this point is... What exactly did we get ourselves into? I have already had the great displeasure of having to explain to each of the girls that we had to put christmas off because daddy couldn't come home... even though the company had said they'd get him home. I wont even go into the displeasure that little bite gave me. One more thing to add to the list of why people don't like the company he works for.
Anyway... I'm hoping to find out more about the industry and what we are in for as a family as well as what I get to look forward to financially and as I try to run the business end of things for him while he minds his miles and hours... Please feel free to point me in the right direction and offer your advice... Always have an open ear... unless he doesn't make the bread and our net gets cut off... :biggrin_25524:

The more I read, the more I want to go to SLC and strangle the recruiter until she gives up his location... so I can go strangle him for jumping head first into the swelling lake of stupidity of that which is CR England... *sigh* I've gotten past wanting to break down into tears and into laughing my arse off at what I'm reading... is that a bad thing?

Yes , it's very unfortunate that you didn't find this forum and learn that "need" gets less and less every day . I hope your husband didn't get sucked into a CRE lease deal . But please keep posting . Your honesty may help wives of wannabes from making similar mistakes . While there is a Ladies Room here maybe the staff members that are truckers' wive should start a sister site , Truckers' Wives' Report . Maybe Former Trucker's Wives Report would be better . ( meaning wives of ex-truckers , not exwives of truckers although a site for them would be quite interesting ).
Really . The wives need to have a voice in this . Maybe they could get an XM radio show and talk about how they'd like to strangle recruiters . :yes2557:

Welcome to the screwed up world of trucking. The first and foremost rule is don't plan anything. If you need to be home on Wednesday , tell your dispatcher that you absolutely have to be home on Monday.
Second rule, believe about 40% of what you read on this or any forum. It is not all gloom and doom. I've been out here for 36 years, both company and o/o, put 2 kids thru college, bought 5 houses and i don't remember how many new cars. You can make a good living. You're not going to get rich. Get your experience when and where you can. Stay where your at , if possible for 1 year, and if you have a clean record, no accidents , clean MVR, you can go to work anywhere. Don't plan on being home every holiday because you will just get disappointed. good luck and keep your your chin up.

luv... by business end I mean making sure the rent and utilities get paid and that he has food and shower money. Bubba... thanks..:D I'll keep the advice in mind and try to shoot it his way... when and if they ever let him answer his phone again... Rick... so far as I know, he has not been stupid enough to sign a lease contract... yet... he's lookin to get his 90 days done and then make his decision on which way he'll go... he said he might not even stick it out there, but try to come home and do local runs for a company here... which sounds lovely... but isn't there more money to be made on coast to coast? meh... things will work out.. they always do... question is, which way will it be for? lol...

The success of someone that started over 30 years ago or even 4 years ago is totally irrelevant . It's a whole new ball game now . Saying you can go anywhere with 1 year experience is not true . The best carriers still require 2 years experience . There are very few opportunities that will be opening up for drivers with a year's experience . There will be thousands of more drivers applying than there will be openings for .

Rick,I was talking about good companies, not the mega "bottom feeders". And yes, there are still good companies out there. The ones that don't advertise but are heard of by word of mouth.
