Why not use gas engines?

My father spoke of those 'good old days' of chugging up the mountain in low gear...When his brother bought that first GM diesel, his drivers has a daily fist fight over who would drive it today as it has so much more power... the PD weighed the trucks struggling to get up the hill but not the diesel truck passing them all.....

 

No I don't think so. But I'm not an expert. Just 30 seconds of Google.
Diesels make more of some pollutants but less co2 than gas.

But with these emissions systems today yeah I think the air coming out is almost cleaner than when it went it

There is more energy in a gallon of diesel (138874 BTUs) versus gasoline (124884 BTUs). That's a 11% advantage. Then there is the resistance to detonation diesel has over gasoline.

 

You know I just posted this in No 5. Tonight. 427 tall deck, mild cam, 750 cfm 4bbl, progressive 5 speed, 2 speed rear on 11r24.5. 3-3.5 mpg driving it like a Saint. A slug would pass you loaded from a stop light. Wound up on a big road, could be embarrassing to some big diesels. Having a seat tank for AV/Race gas was used to catch the big diesels.

Oh and swap motors about 120-130k miles. You just had a spare ready to go at all times. Headers would melt, had to stick with the good flowing cast manifolds. When gas went over a dollar a gallon, it was useless.

 

Heck if you can promise me 5mpg I'll go gas in a heart beat. Especially since I don't get 5 mpg now, and gas is cheaper and lighter than diesel.

 

I rarely saw double digits with a Powerstroke F-550 lol. Like 8-9 was usual.
