Is driving otr or regional a better choice if I don't have any friends, family or kids? I'd like to haul non-hazmat food grade loads

    TruckerLlew Thanks this.

Is there a particular reason you don’t have any family or friends?

I don't have any family to speak of.. I like it that way too.. but I still like to get by the shop every 6 weeks or so. to get out of the truck a couple days and see friends....Iam OTR but basically certain lanes
I have not spent a Major Holiday at home for 34 years.. I love running on holidays..
Loading Twin Falls Idaho this afternoon and kick them off in Indiana tomorrow evening..
    I love my life style..

    in one word......NO

you will not like the job after x amount of time. EVERYONE has SOMEONE at the home base. be it the barbershop, gas station, fish bait and tackle shop, grocery store, etc, etc.

everyone needs and craves human contact with someone at the home base.

sure, you can make a friend or two along the way, but that contact person, or people that you can call almost anytime day or night at the home base, are what's going to keep you from going insane out there.

you very well may burn out in short time, maybe become disgruntled by being alone, with no one to talk to.

communicating on a trucking website, via typing a few words, is NOT the same as talking to someone from home.

At the end of the day it's going to come down to what works best for you and your preferences.

Even though some people, obviously in this thread already, think that they can answer for everyone and know every one that's simply not true... All people are different and you really at the end of the day just have to find out on your own.

Personally I prefer OTR. I like the extra miles, I like being able to see different parts of the country. I get burned out on regional and I'm pretty sure the same would be true with local. I've done regional on I get burned out on the same old.

It's really going to depend on what works best for you.

OTR food grade is what I do. Only family I have living in this country are aunts and cousins etc and I am fine with seeing them a few times per year.

If you are OK with limited/no social life then OTR is perfect for you.

Most know what kind of work they want to try.
You already want food grade tanker.
If you have no obligations for home or family it sounds like you want OTR imho.

I'm in the same boat now. Wife passed on in May, kids basically written me off. Been OTR for 30 years with minimum time off so no real developed friendships. I'm sticking to OTR as it's all I pretty much know. Have no interest in retiring or working local. I think that would kill me quicker than anything else.

OTR has nothing to do with whether or not you have friends. Some people just hate the lifestyle.

    tscottme and TravR1 Thank this.
