It's a CM870. Look at the VGT actuator. I have the same engine.

OP, do oil analysis as previously stated. If you use Blackstone and overnight the sample, they'll put you at the front of the line. You can also pull the valve cover and look at the cams. If you post the engine serial number, one of us can look it up in Quickserve. You can also make your own account for free.

So let's look at the numbers so that recon engine has about 872k on it now. The transmission & rears have 1.6 you didn't say anything about those. I would say it is time for another overhaul. We don't believe in if ain't broke don't fix it. Unless you just want to see what you can get out of it. If you move forward with it dyno it. Have the bearings done so you get an idea of how she has been doing among other things.

Look at the data plate mounted on your valve cover. Should be on the driver's side, near the front going from memory. It will be there.

I’d cut the zip tie holding heater hoses to the front brake air hose. That’s not right. Otherwise it’s obviously been painted very nicely. Not sure what a Recon Cummins is. Rebuilt crate motor, I suppose. I’d have to research what parts are typically replaced. That many miles there’s no guarantees. Be lucky to get a year out of it. Maybe a few? Maybe 5, anyone’s guess. Price of Truck should reflect the cost of needing an overhaul.

My own learning experience. Bought a Freightliner FLD, 1.3 million miles maybe, Blackstone Labs said everything looked good. I put new injectors, rods and mains, and it ran like a top till it dropped a valve. I had to through the motor away. Broke the block, head and turbo :( Lesson learned, I should have put a platinum kit in it with a reman head. Otherwise, I now know I was on borrowed time. Won’t make that mistake again.

One way I look at it is the engine went 730ish then a recon was installed that now has 872 on it . So roughly 140 k more than the first time. Cm871 deleted have very clean oil at 15 k and many go to 1.25 or better if driven right.

thats a cm870 i have it in my 06. that engine has or had a egr. i can't see behind the turbo. the other pic. shows the pipe that runs from the egr cooler that goes around back of engine to the intake. if it didn't have the egr it wouldn't have that pipe the data plate will say if it should have a egr.
