Hey guys, I'm a canuck living and working in the US on a visa right now and I'm curious if it's possible in any way shape or form to get a US CDL? I thought that I could do it by switching my CDN license to a TX regular car license and then re-upgrading to a CDL here, but they wont allow that until I can show em proof of residency, like a green card. Any ideas?
Possible to get a US CDL??

If your here on a work visa show that to them along with your social security card. My wife had to do that before her green card was approved

No dice, I’ve been here 3 years and you’re only allowed a us CDL with permanent residency or green card.
I’ve tried everything.
I currently have a Canadian CDL and Arizona Drivers license.Russell The Trucker Thanks this. -
Insurance rates are a killer if you have a CDN CDL here. Thats the biggest reason. I read on another page that FL will apparently do it, and my visa lawyer says that he had guys go from BC to CA and do the swap there...but I dont know all the details of that transaction.

BTW Bonder, I talked to Daniel York, awesome guy to deal with. My ins renewal from Progressive for 1 truck was going to be $102610 if you can believe that...all because of 1 bad inspection, nothing else.
Ive just found a solution to what we both are looking for. Give me a shout four three two nine four three zero zero nine five.Last edited: Dec 3, 2021

some brilliant cop in Georgia locked a Canadian car driver in a cage at the police station because he had never seen a Canadian drivers license and thought it was fake .

Currently in Arizona. Arizona is requiring a permanent physical address so my Airbnb addresses won’t do. They also require a rewrite of the CDL test plus endorsements. Medical card and P-test. Texas was the same
Way.
I’m thinking to go back to New Mexico that seemed to have a straight across trade-in for my CND CDL to a NM CDL.
I’m not sure if any companies will hire with a CND CDL and just have one drive. I had a gig with a film company out this way and when we were considering to rent from Penske a D Straight Truck, Penske was fine with my CND license.
I haven’t checked out any formal companies yet. I don’t know where I got this idea that AZ was some laid back vacation spot. It’s a pretty serious, conservative and tight state. -

Actually, this seems
To read that we can continue driving in the US as CND CDL holders.
I feel companies won’t hire despite this. I’ve found that no one would hire , of any kind of work without my Green card AND my social…Green card caught up with me first and the social I was finally able to get an appointment by late September. No actual social card yet but I do have the number.BigHossVolvo Thanks this. -

Guys, please help me out here. How do I get a US work visa and/or green card? I tried googling, calling companies to sponsor and all that jazz with no luck. Can you please share your stories how you got into the US as a Canadian?
