It seems to be an animal treatment issue with them. They do not want pork products brought in for sale that have not enjoyed the space allocations prescribed by their proposition's. To wit, it requires a pregnant sow have 24 square feet of space during the term. Iowa hog operations ain't big enough to allow each hog there that much room as presently constructed.
Also, if the sow is not fairly well contained, she is prone to flop down to allow babies to feed and mash half the litter to death.

Absolutely. Not casting any shade on other pork-producing states.

I'm just saying that the meat department at my little local market has some GREAT locally raised and processed thick cut BACON!

Cali is a net importer of pork (figured it was the other way). So it's all up to the people that raise em if they want to comply and market there.

Kinda like truck emissions either comply or don't run there. Shouldn't affect the rest of the states unless others jump on the bandwagon.

Maybe the piglet breeders need to take a look at what the dog breeders do. Dog folks build a box with rails on the side to keep an escape area for the pups when mom jumps in and flops down. When done nursing mom walks out. Breeder will get creative when their revenue stream is threatened.

I have a very difficult time keeping up with this thread as well. Basically neglect other threads just trying to keep up here, and am sure that I still miss some posts. Its a good thread, but can be overwhelming to read it all. Some days I just have to skip some, or else fall further behind.
