Cobra Electronics 7700 PRO GPS

I joined this board for the single purpose of commenting on the cobra 7700. First of all I'm a 20 year driver, business owner and owner op. I'm a practical sort and wouldn't comment unless strongly motivated to do so. For my Christmas gift to myself I went with a gps system. I went first with the name I knew best which is garmin. I'm a pilot and am familiar with garmin mls and fligt systems in aircraft. Well, I was not happy with the nuvi 465. I took it back and went with the next name I trusted which was Rand Mcnally. I drove with each unit for two days. The difference in these two units is virtually nill. Both have irritating qualities when trying to zoom in or out, neither are helpful when trying to move around on the map and locate crossroads etc... I was about to get my money back but decided to try the 7700. As soon as I turned it on and checked a few items I was impressed. In defense of the others, The larger screen helps tremendously. But beyond the screen, the Cobra is just so much easier to work with and includes features and ease of use which I really appreciate.

I will simply say to anyone interested- people always have opinions of this or that, and so my opinion may not suit your taste. But I would strongly suggest to anyone before a final decision go and try out this 7700. I guarantee you it will be the preferred gps for the truck.

I'm still one of those aggravating wannabes, but I do appreciate posts like yours. When I do actually get out there, I'll refer back to posts, such as yours, before I make many decisions. Thanks!

So after seeing this monster of a GPS unit with a 7 inch screen made my Cobra....I jumped right at it. (Bought it at the 5th wheel on the QEW)
Well I do like it for it's size...but with that size comes the problem of it obstructing my view out of my lower right hand windsheild.
Another thing that pee's me off with this thing is if I leave Ottawa and set a destination of say Toronto, once I hit the 401, it keeps telling me how far I have to go to the next exit......and with many many exits between Ottawa and toronto...I turn down the volume or else am tempted to throw it out the window.
I also find it impossible to be able to read local street names as I drive by a street. It will let me know the street I am on but the upcoming street won't be marked...and good luck trying to set the downward view. Mine stays at 200 feet, no matter what I do.
To make a long story short, I pulled the unit, put it under my bunk ( too late to return it ) and reinstalled my old TomTom.
Do I like the unit? Yes I do...but in my opinion, it's just not ready for the real world.
Hopefully an update later down the way will fix these little quirps and I can use it again, but for now.....I'll still with my old TomTom

If you cannot find a good spot for it on the windshield, an external antenna is available which will then let you place the unit wherever you want.

If your unit is stuck at a 200-foot zoom level, it might be that it is set on auto-zoom.

1. Tap anywhere on the map screen for the MENU.
2. Tap on CONFIGURE.
3. Tap on AUTO SCALE.
4. Tap the checkbox for MANUAL ZOOM.
5. Tap on OK.

The unit will now stay at whatever zoom level you choose. To adjust the zoom level, tap on the black bar at the top of the map screen and then tap on the + and - icons.

Thanks for your info on explaining to me how to get my zoom to work.
I just checked the Cobra website expecting to ba able to buy the extention antenna, but I don't see it.
Can you post a link to it?

Our website is undergoing some behind-the-scenes modifications, and so I cannot get the external antenna added to our website until the first week in January. Until then you can order by calling Customer Service at 773-889-3087. The part number is EXT GPS ANT and the price is $29.95. It has a 13' cable and is only about 1.5" x 1.75". Roughly the size of a book of matches. It has a magnetic base.

No there's no advantage. If you cannot find it locally then try our website or other online retailers. Me, I'm always looking for the lowest price.

There are some accessories that retailers will not bother to stock. For example it will be hard to find a retailer that stocks the external antenna. Most people don't buy it, and so retailers don't want to stock it.

Hi, I have the 7700 Pro and am very happy with it, the voice is clear and loud, with the engine running, the radio and c.b going I still have to turn the volume down on the 7700. One thing that would be nice to see is a quick mute icon for those times I hit the Customs booth and forgot to turn down the volume. I live in Ontario Canada and have had no problems with any Ontario or Quebec addresses entered so far or even entering U.S addresses while still in Canada. The 7700 does need a map update though for the streets in Canada and the U.S built after the the built in software's release, I know there is one coming can you let us know when and where we can find the ordering info for it. thanks. Great Product.

I will forward your comments about a mute button. Regarding the map update, it should be released by the end of next week. I will post a note here when it becomes available. If you want to inquire, you can always call Customer Service at 773-889-3087.

I should have mentioned that this is currently the fastest way to mute the speaker:

1. Tap on the black bar at the top of the map screen.
2. Tap on the speaker icon.
3. Tap on the speaker icon again.

Repeat the above to un-mute the sound.
