Hello everybody,
I'm not sure how to ask my questions without writing a short story! But I'm gonna try and keep it short so I don't lose you to boredom.
About me- I'm a 45 year old plain white guy with a D (Old job paid for it and he only had hydraulic brake trucks) I'm thinking about getting my AZ and entering the trucking world as a company driver (I don't have aspirations of owning a truck) My old job (20 years ago) was driving a straight truck for a race team to and from the races in Canada and the USA. Also drove across Canada for the same outfit putting on events for GM new car dealers.
I live out in the Cobourg area and ideally I'd like to find a job that either sends me East or North, I don't want to be in the GTA if I can avoid it. I live alone and I'm leery of leaving the house empty for long periods of time, so I'm kinda hoping to find a gig that brings me home weekly or even daily. I'd like to go East and cross into the states at either of the 2 bridges out there if I were to cross the border for the job.
Or should I just look for a DZ job? After I get my Z of course.
I'm open to all help and advice. In my mind I'd love to drive for a small company with a couple of trucks. where the owner would come on a road test with me and decide if I have the skills to drive for them.
I don't qualify for any government assistance for the MELT course. So after reading all that, do you guys/girls think I should pursue it? Or with a list of wants like that, I'm being unreasonable and should go flip burgers.....LOL.

What's the MELT cost there? Here in SK it's around $11,000 now I think, and 4 weeks of your time...........so you have to be REALLY sure you want to do it.

I'm seeing $8-10K. As has been said by many, sucks to spend that just to work for free for the first while to get it back. I'm sure it's one of the biggest deterrents for those who have to foot the whole bill.

That's exactly correct.....unfortunately.

If you need to be home somewhat frequently, I'd consider just sticking with your D class, getting your air brake endorsement and finding a vocational opportunity nearby. (Ready mix truck, roll off, rental equipment delivery, etc).

Honestly as a driver it will take two months minimum to regain the cost of the MELT class, plus the time to do the MELT class. What are we at, 12 weeks total now, is it worth it? Probably not but change is good sometimes.
All perspective I guess, my wife paid $1M to get through med school and that alone took 10 years, so..Nova540 Thanks this.
