Staying Warm…

Don't go cheap on thermals. Dig deep, spend a bit. The pain will be temporary. FROSTBITE sucks far, far more!

Hit a farm store and get one or two sets now to hold you over. Then, next summer/fall, load up during the season run up sales.

Also, a good set of insulated coveralls in addition to thermals! Absolute necessity in Michgan. Carharts or Walls. Get'em heavy and get used to them.

I would have to agree with @brsims on this one, don't cheap out, the low cost ones always seemed to not hold their shape/size thru multiple washings. I can't recommend a brand at the moment because I always had issues wearing thermal bottoms.

What I can recommend is to pick up a pair of Duluth Trading fleece lined fire hose pants and try them. Get ready for the sticker shock, they cost up the wazoo, but they are worth it. I tried about a half dozen other brands, including Carhartt and Duluth are the best in terms of holding shape and size and fitting well so as not to restrict or pinch when moving and dragging hoses. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't buy anything else they make, I think it's all way to overpriced for what you get compared to other brands, but here they hit the mark.

A pair of those, a good down coat and a 30 year old pair of Carhartt insulated bibs has kept me warm even during unloading in Wisconsin in double digit below zero temps.

 

A good pair of long John's or thermal underwear. Top and bottom. I usually wear a long john top and a long sleeve shirt and then a hooded sweatshirt. Keeps me good till negative Temps. Then I break out the bid overalls. Then when it hits -40 I probably throw on a coat.

I like my long John's to fit nice and tight against my skin to prevent bunching up.

 

Meijer had some decent prices on Carhart Jackets. I got a nice hooded Falls Creek brand insulated jacket. Looks like a Carhart for $29

 

I use Nike Pro long underwear and Klim outerwear.
Spendy but works good and drys fast.
I have a boot drier and glove drier at home that is priceless ,
Im outside all night spotting trailers.
I also use Sno Seal on my boots to keep my feet dry.
