Aren’t those plugs meant to be used to drain debries from bottom? My concern is if they can leak later

Yes, they are to drain tanks. Yes it;s big chance they will leak because it's really hard to put plug back with fuel running along your arm and didn't damage plug threads. To open plugs you need to have very low fuel level in the tank. The lowest level you can achieve is about 10 gal. To drain 1 gallon of debris you will drain 5 to 8 gallons of fuel. As i said diesel shower guarantee. I did it, believe me. The easiest and cleanest way it's to take the sludge with siphon or pump Pamela posted.

They won't leak but it's best if you drain the tanks.

When you reinstall them you can put plumbers thread sealant on them. You do not have to make them crazy tight either.

They are pipe thread but they are special fuel tank tapered threads designed not to leak. I still put the plumber's putty on mine just to be safe, although with that type of a thread you don't really need to.

This is the sealant that I use even for airline fittings and whatever. Occasionally I use teflon, but almost always I use this.

I park on a hill so the low spot is the back of the tanks, let the truck sit there a few hours. Then put the siphon tube in the lowest part and suck out a few gallons from each tank.
    I do it yearly.
