I’m looking to switch from dry van own authority to tanker/ hazmat. I ran tanker and hazmat for a company for years but thought it would be easier and cheaper to slide into dry van once I went totally independent. Well now it’s been a year and I’m ready to move back to what I love to do what is tankers. I’m all ears to the equipment that will keep me loaded and what other steps I would need to be 100 percent correct. I don’t even have an idea how to get the tanker loads because on the normal load broads u don’t see but 2-5 loads and I know that’s not it. I believe I’m not looking in the right places for loads.

If I understand you correctly you want to have a hazmat qualified authority. If so the cost of that for a one truck operation is going to be expensive. I don't believe it is feasible money & regulation involved for a one truck operation. I would call your insurance company and see what the cost is for insurance and check with fmsca to see what you have to do to get the hazmat authority.
I will say this if that is your goal to obtain a hazmat authority go for it and build your business. All the best to you on your journey. Merry Christmas trucker

Your insurance is going to be phenomenally high with HAZMAT so if you don't have a contracted customer lined up you're only going to be making revenue for the insurance company. If you can even get coverage that is. Pick a dry van and run the boards if you're looking to make any cash.

Are you wanting to do actual tanker Haz or be able to haul tanker Haz dry van loads?

I’d look at a company like Great West. You’ll need to get your Haz permit as well. As a driver you need to pass some Haz training but it’s not that big of a deal.

You definitely won’t be able to do anything with progressive or anybody like that.

I know a lot about Haz and tanker hauling and insurance but only when it comes to dry and reefer. Tanker itself I do believe there is a load board for but 90% of it is direct hire or through carriers who have contracts locked down. From my experience.
