I'm curious as to WHY Admin doesn't have an explanation thread as to why you CAN NOT sell or transfer YOUR MC/DOT number?? Every thread offering one for sale should be shut down & removed from the Forum. IN case somebody is reading this for the very first time & doesn't know: WHEN YOU APPLY FOR & ARE ASSIGNED A MC/USDOT NUMBER, IT IS PERMANENTLY ASSIGNED TO YOU, OR THE COMPANY YOU OWN. YOU CAN'T SELL, TRANSFER, GIVE IT AWAY BECAUSE ITS ASSIGNED TO YOU. ANYBODY WANTING A MC/DOT NUMBER MUST APPLY, PAY THE FEES & BE ASSIGNED ONE, WHICH IS FOREVER YOURS. IDK WHY THIS IS SOOOO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND??

I think the confusion may be that it’s the company that would be sold with the number and not really the MC number on its own.
I believe if the MC is issued to a company the company could be sold and the MC would go with the company.
Even when a company takes on a partner or partners the company does not have to apply for a new MC.

If it's sold it gets a new DOT# (if done legal, most are not) If a c-corp just the stock and assets are sold, both DOT & MC remain the same.

So if an llc takes on a new 50 percent partner they need to get a new DOT number?

So you’re telling me that every time a big company buys another company , they have to apply for a new MC number ?

the MC number is assigned to the company , as you mentioned in your post.

when the company is sold , the MC number assigned to the company goes with it

So according to the info you linked to the DOT number stays the SAME for change of ownership for corporations, partnerships, and other business entities.
The ONLY TIME the DOT number changes is when a SOLE PROPRIETOR sells his equipment the DOT number does NOT go with the new owner.
    Is this Accurate?

If the person/entity buying has ever had a MC# the feds combine the ratings. Quite a bit is up to them on what happens. That's why most of these type of sales are not really "legal" sales. If there is a SS# associated in any way with the MC, then a new DOT. A legal sale continues to use the same FEIN#.
