Super Single Tires

Granted, I don't run gravel roads any more frequently than I have to. OTOH, I do plenty of winter driving - anything from frozen or snow-packed to deep fresh snow. I haven't had any problems, chain only infrequently - and the guys with the open-shoulder, agressively-lugged duals seem to be frequently digging out out somewhere they're stuck while I'm rolling down the road. Your Mileage May Vary - mine's great.

...or maybe it's just that I learned to drive somewhere where winter is real, and it's expected you can deal with it.

 

Now that's a good women right there that will come and pull you out with the tractor.

 

I will concede that driver ability is also key to all of this. Like I stated though, it is not the down right rear end chilling cold that is a problem, and snow, it is primarily when it is a combination of ice, slush, and mud in off highway that I am talking about. I have used less rolling resistance tires in the past, and liked them, but it is not practical for all I get in to. I would dearly love to run the lowest RR tires I could. But it seems like a small inconvenience in mpg for the peace of mind in those tougher situations. And like I also stated, averaging over 7.5 mpg for the life of the truck, hand calculated, is not that bad.

 

The Western Star I am getting will be coming with the XDN2 11r 24.5 tires. I wanted this tire because from Oct-May I will be on roads that time to time are snow covered 6+ inches at times, and also we deal with mud and snow at the same time in the fall and spring. I am on highway 80% of the time but when I am off highway I am really off and I cant take the chances of not having very good traction.

I am new to trucking and I was just thinking that when someone makes a statement about super single tires it would be incredibly help full if the tire make and model number could be included. Everyone could then learn from such post.

 

There is only one real SS the rest are junk there is only one reason for running them and a RR of 120 won't cut it

 

Before i have michelin xdn2, in 300k only i tire blow out ,never troubles in snow,was a good tire.after when was time to change last year i was buying the new goodyear ss392 duraseal,never more blow out with this tire iam happy with my new goodyear ss

 

What size were the old tall super single tires before they went low pro?... Kiem ran them for years.
