Sterering Shaft Install

I can’t see the ends of the shaft in the picture but is there a ujoint on one end of the shaft?
The copper looking pieces look like the clips that go on the inner side of the ujoint caps to hold them in.
Do both ends of the shaft take a bolt and a nut?
Or does one end take a bolt threaded in to a hole with no nut?

 

I don’t recall ever hearing about retorque every 50 k

 

I’m guessing the side ( red) for the steering box has a yoke welded to it. Leave the yoke on the steering box, don’t take it off. Hook up the new shaft using the u joint. I’m guessing other side ( inside Truck) has just a spline shaft. So you’ll have to remove the pinch bolt and yoke from the old shaft, and put it on the new one, using the new pinch bolt. The clips are for the u joint. Surprised they didn’t give you 4. I’d just get 2 new u joints, they’ll come with the clips also, since changing them is easy now. Half as much work since shafts already out. My FLD has a sealed u joint at the steering box, and an old style with grease fitting inside the Cab. I don’t know why. Seems backwards to me. I’ve had to replace the old style (with grease fitting) on both of my prior Trucks at the steering box around 600k. Both u joints on my current Truck are still tight, after 2 mil miles. Made Me a believer in the sealed greaseless type. I’d still change them if I had my column out. A picture of both ends would help.

 

My guess is someone screwed up the hardware that was sent.
It most likely should have come with two bolt set ups and NO ujoint clips.
With that being said I have had steering shafts unbolted and rebolted many times over the years for various service procedures with out replacing the bolts.
I never ran into a problem.

 

Sure you could do that for your own piece of mind.
