I tell my "beady shifty eyed wheasel dispatcher" that I need some sleep and can't make it from LA to Hunts point in two days with my hot load of strawberrys. Who do you think gets Blackballed by DAC,starved out by the trucking company. If you are not a player you make no money. Why do you think the DOT lets the company pay by the mile. Safety is nothing more than "revenue inhancement in the name of safety" The dot is run by people that have never drove a truck.

I have heard so many thoughts and ideas regarding making our highways safer and the majority of them are targeted to the truck drivers. I do not entirely disagree that issues need to be addressed with truckers, but most of the issues are not with the health of the drivers in my opinion. My opinion is that the issues need to be taken with the ####y know it all drivers that believe that their way is the only way and want everyone else off the road. I say that when you think you have learned it all then you need to hand your keys over because you are no longer safe in any way shape or form.
On the flip side of that is that the drivers of the 4-wheelers should be required to learn how to drive around an 18-wheeler. They should never pull in front of one and then think they can either slow down, stop or assume that the truck can stop quickly. Bigger doesn't mean stops easier.
Anyways, I will jump off the soapbox and simply wish all the best to the drivers and hope for many safe and happy returns.

Making the highway safer is definitely something that needs to be considered. It is also definitely true that there are a lot of younger drivers that could be causing problems as a high BMI can cause problems. Young people these days have a much higher BMI and are at a high risk for health problems as well.

sleep apnea is only one cause of fatigued driving. Crashes due to fatigue driving are the problem. The number two cause of young adult crashes in some states right now is fatigue driving. It would better serve the trucking community to learn to recognize the onset of fatigue and how to safely deal with it's effects then to think sleep apnea stands alone as a singular issue.
