Odds are you're going to end up having to factor your receivables just to be able to pay the carriers on time. That cuts into your end. Your buddy has 20K? How far do you really think that will go?

What good is a brokerage with no customers? How can you build relationships with carriers when you have no freight to load them with?

It's easy to get customers. The problem is finding ones that pay well and on time that aren't incredibly difficult to deal with. My junk box is full of load lists of cheap freight from direct customers. I found every one of them by picking up the phone and calling them. Too bad most of it isn't worth my time.

How's getting direct customers work? You call'em and some just say: sure, why not, we can use you? That easy?
I've noticed here that most of the members here with own customers are open deck, much less reefers and vans. It must have something to do with the characteristics of the open-deck freight.ProfessionalNoticer Thanks this. -
Pretty much. I usually ask for the shipping manager or whoever is in charge of transportation. Tell them who I am and what I offer and hope for the best. You have to be smart about where you solicit though. Single truck carriers don't really bring anything to the table of a large manufacturer. However, a small place would be more likely to use one.TallJoe Thanks this.
