Is this normal? Went to apply and test for my CLP in Texas yesterday. Wanted to take the required 4 exams as well as the endorsements for Hazmat, Tanker and Double/ triples. Was told by the DMV person that I could only take the initial 4 exams. I would have to take the driving skills test, pass that and be issued the CDL-A before I could come back and take the endorsement exams.
I have read the Texas manual several times and can not find that stated anywhere.
Good news is that I passed my exams and was issued my CLP !!
Texas DMV would not let me test for endorsements

Makes total sense.otherwise you have to test with the double triple and tanker. If you do it after you get your license it is just a written test.
ColoradoLinehaul, Oxbow and MOBee Thank this. -
Got it, she could not really explain the reason to me, just that " you dont want to do that, you need to wait until you take your skills test and get your CDL-A and come back."
Guess I owe her a thank you next time I go back.
Thanks for the quick reply.Oxbow and BennysPennys Thank this. -
@jimmydsmith7 Did you have to set an appointment online with the DPS to take the CLP test or just walk in to the DPS office to take it?
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Had to set a appointment on line. Actually had to travel to a different town than the one I live in, my towns office didnt have an opening until Jan 17th!

Thanks, my son could not get one till March in the Ft Worth office, will have him check in other DPS office sites. You know that's crazy it is for the CLP not the Driving test for the CDL.

Have you already found a job?
BennysPennys Thanks this. -
Recently tested for the hazmat in Tx., already had cdl. Nearest DPS office is Jacksonville but had to drive down to Palestine. It seems you can't do anything at the Jacksonville DPS without setting an appt. months before. A 35 minute drive to Palestine as a "walk in" and I tested immediately.
It's crazy how different DPS offices in TX. operate.
I passed btw.Oxbow, tscottme and BennysPennys Thank this. -
No, do not have a job lined up yet. I am a long time health care worker, 37 years, about to retire. I am planning on trying to find a local job, not sure what is out there. I plan on getting my CDL, then testing the waters as to what is available. I am in great shape for a 60yr old, run 3 miles every other day, with no health issues. We have everything paid for, home and autos, no credit card debt. Wife and I both retiring at the same time, she is a nurse that has worked at the same hospital for 35 years. We started saving 20% of our pay since the day we got married and according to our financial advisor we will be bringing home the same amount of money as if we were still working. Only difference is we will have to pay for our own health insurance. Hopefully I can make enough driving to cover that. Hopefully my age will not be a factor is finding a position, as I am excited to be starting a new career driving.
