They weren't needed, they were a "just in case" precaution. Point is, the truck did its thing with no human involvement.

Man oh man. When are these companies going to realise that robots and automation do not buy their products.

I still say it’s 15-20 years away before it’s legitimately a threat to start taking jobs. These companies do these little PR things every once in a while to get investors excited again and get more money invested. And then they eventually reach these stopping points they can’t get past. You also don’t understand the restructuring and infrastructure that needs to be in place at the shippers and receivers to be able to accept these trucks. It will cost each shipper and receiver hundreds of millions of dollars and with the exception of the big mega shippers and receivers there’s no money for that.

Im waiting for the day those things get popular. I'll sell my truck and start a towing company. I live close to i90 in SD. It gets really cold and we get lots of snow. I cant imagine a self driving truck would do to good on snow and ice. What about in any mountain region where chains are required? Just my opinion it will be years before those things take off. Then you get a few states in the middle of the country that dont allow em and all the sudden they dont look as good to the megas due to the amount of loads that wouldn't work.

Why would Walmart need outside carriers or drivers other than some local ones .

It amazes me that there are companies trying so hard to take thousands of jobs away from people.

The lead car was there to scout for obstacles, that means the truck was only able to do its thing because it had human intervention. It's eventually coming, but as was pointed out the infrastructure isn't ready yet. Fueling, inspecting, obstacles, & regulations are just a few issues. Unmanned freight going down the road that can be stopped & stolen at will has to be a real concern nowadays as well.
