99 Volvo Vnl single axle, Cummins M11, Super 10
farm truck used for hauling hay and equipment. Went to start it today and didn’t have it plugged in. Starter cranked but then released the ring gear but kept spinning. Luckily I had a metric adjustable wrench in the cab and disconnected the positive cable before anything else happened. Plugged the truck in hoping some heat might let it release, but no luck. I’ll pick up a solenoid tomorrow and try to go get a load of hay, but starter seemed slower the past few weeks so it’s probably starter time too.
I’ve replaced tractor starters with gear reduction, and haven’t seen that much difference. Any point in running a 39 or is there a better starter out there? Best place to buy them?
thanks in advance for your response. Happy New Year!

Volvo dealers have Mitsubishi starters. My local parts sales guys highly recommend them, so I just installed one on my 2001 Vnl.

Mitsubishi gear reduction starters are great .... easy on batteries, quick to spin the motor over.

This is good information as I am getting a new engine in a few weeks. I wasn’t aware of Mitsubishi starters. I assume their alternators are good too?
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Looks like it was the solenoid on the fire wall. I cleaned up the contacts, sprayed everything down with carb cleaner, and a few love taps on both solenoids with a Tonya Harding Special and it Fired up. I Still think the starter is on its way out, but at least I’m rolling again for now.
Thanks again for the responses.
JayRideandrepair and BobO1176 Thank this.
